An Overdue Thank You

Dear Editor;

Our after school chess program at PS 114 is alive and well. We have approximately 25 fifth graders and 15 fourth graders participating every Monday afternoon. After about 15 minutes of instruction, the children have about 45 minutes to play chess with one another, or against one of four computers. We have novice and experienced players in the group, and dismissal time seems to come way before we’re ready to quit.

Although we were turned down for the grant funding we applied for, we have been able to pay our teacher from generous contributions of our local merchants, and from a substantial gift from our PTA.

I would now like to name all those who have kindly donated money to our chess program, Allstate Insurance, Beach Cleaners, The Beach Club, Belle Harbor Chemists, Brown’s Hardware, F&B Pharmacy, Dr. Nancy Gables, Harbor Optics, Island Pediatrics, In Sync, Inc., Dr. Mark Lewis, Mirkin Eye Care, The Original Ciros, Paper Panda, The Surf Shop, Sammy’s Variety, Treiber Roberts, and World Champions Karate Center.

To all those listed and to the PTA of PS 114, a giant, heartfelt thank you for helping to make our program possible.

CYNTHIA PEITHMAN
