I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy New Year.

I wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the fantastic staff of the Sanitation Department (Queens East 14) on the mobilization for the removal of more than 12 inches of snow that fell on the Rockaway peninsula. It was great to see the Sanitation Department picking up snow and clearing all the major roads and shopping streets and making a clear path for all lour constituents to use the bus.

While Nassau County seems to have been forgotten, Rockaway for the first time in years was treated like gold. Hats off to Sanitation Commissioner Kevin Farrell, whose birthday fell on the day of the snowstorm. Happy birthday and thank you. We mustn’t forget to thank Mayor Rudy Giuliani for the fantastic job in helping the city to clean out from our first major snowstorm.

I would also like to note that we agree with Mayor Giuliani that the Port Authority did a poor job in clearing the snow and managing the airports during and after the snowstorm.

When I look out my office window I can see Waldbaum’s shopping center, which was cleaned and functional a few hours after the snowstorm.

On New Year’s Eve we had the pleasure of attending the Daniel O’Connell Post 272 American Legion party. At the table was a woman who is like a mom to me, Catherine Diffley, and dear old dad, Bill Diffley. Also at our table were the famous Mario Russo and his lovely bride Diane as well as the woman we call Rockaway’s Borough President, Elaine Castas, and her husband. Past Commander Bob Condeleo and his lovely wife Pat, as well as Lou and Mary Romas, were with us. The food and music were great and we all had a good time.

We meet with members of the Good Government Regular Democratic Club and other local residents every Thursday evening from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. You can come up with community problems or just to discuss current events. The office is located at 112-20 Beach Channel drive. I welcome your membership, but you don’t have to be a member to drop in.
