Harbor Health & Fitness Flexes Muscle:
New Year Brings Expanded Services

It was in 1997 that Dr. James Kiernan, a local chiropractor and resident of Breezy Point, purchased Rockaway’s premier health and fitness gym – The Exercise Club. Renaming it to Harbor Health & Fitness, Dr. Kiernan knew this was just the first step in bringing forth many positive improvements to the fitness scene in Rockaway.

Harbor Health & Fitness, located at 114-12 Beach Channel drive, offers convenience and quality to its clients. Only minutes from any home in Rockaway, with a knowledgeable and caring staff, and the most modern equipment, Harbor Health & Fitness is one of the peninsula’s hidden treasures. Where else can you workout with a view of Jamaica Bay and the skyscrapers of Manhattan?

Harbor Health & Fitness offers all its clients the use of treadmills, bicycles, step machines, free weights, and elliptical machines. The newest addition to the gym, a 2000 square foot room, offers clients the use of hammer strength chest press, hammer strength shoulder press, hack squat, squat rack, and multi-level benches.

Other programs offered include aerobics, step classes, cardio kickboxing, sculpting classes, spin, senior aerobic classes, and yoga. The room, which formerly housed the weights, is now being used strictly for hot yoga and a boxing gym is being constructed as of this writing.

Want to learn how to work out the right way without hurting yourself while getting the most impact? Personal training sessions are also available with Shaun Ruskin, best known as the writer of The Wave’s Fitness Forum, or other staff members.

A free club training session is available for new members. A tour of the gym and a lesson on exact use of equipment is offered during this session.

"It’s all about the atmosphere," said Liz McGee, a client of Harbor Health & Fitness. "I was always intimidated by the gym, but here it’s different. People are friendly and it’s a great place to workout."

Charlie O’Reilly said, "The best thing is you don’t have to wait for equipment. There’s enough to go around."

There are no excuses not to join! Do the kids keep you busy? No problem – There’s onsite free babysitting offered. Do you hate trying to find a parking spot? No problem – There is plenty of free parking in the rear.

Harbor Health & Fitness is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
