Julia (Walsh) Ballou
Former Rockaway Resident
Julia (Walsh) Ballou died Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Marlboro Park Hospital in Bennettsville, SC.
Julia was born and raised in Rockaway to the late James and Julia Quigley Walsh. She attended St. Francis De Sales, Belle Harbor and St. Vincent’s School of Nursing.
After retiring from nursing she owned a local restaurant, The Newton House.
She is survived by her husband, Theodore; five daughters, Jeanne Smith, Julia Krafnick, Jayne DuPre, Janet Woodle and Jackie Freeman; one brother, Donald Walsh; five sons-in-laws; 17 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Interment under the direction of Whittner-Evans Funeral Home of Bennettsville was at Sunset Cemetery, Bennettsville, SC.
Bob L. Curry
Owned R&B Music Box
Bobbie L. Curry was born in Boston, Georgia to the late Bennie and Katheryn Curry.
He moved to Newark, NJ with his family at the age of three. There he attended the Newark public school system and later joined the U.S. Navy. He received an honorable discharge in 1963.
Bob married his wife, the late Carol Means, in 1968. He was the owner of The Music Box record store in Newark. He along with his children later moved to Rockaway and opened the R&B (Rob and Bob) Music Box.
He was also active in the Harry S. Truman Democratic Club and spent some time fishing.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Robin; his son, Jason; one brother, William Curry; two sisters, Lessie L. Curry and Paulette Curry-Briscoe; his special friend, Diane; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
Interment under the direction of Woody "Home for Services was at Rosedale Cemetery in Orange, NJ.
Thomas M. Fagan
Missed By Many
Mass of Christian burial for Thomas M. Fagan was celebrated Thursday, August 17, 2000 at St. Camillus
Church, Rockaway Beach.
Thomas was a resident of Netera Park in Yonkers and was a lifelong summer resident of Rockaway.
He died suddenly on Saturday, August 12, 2000 at the young age of 40.
Thomas was the son of Anne and John Fagan; devoted husband to Carol Schnapper; brother to John, Kate Maloney, Mary Ellen, Robert and Steven. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor’s Funeral Home Inc., was at Gate of Heaven, Valhalla.
June C. Gregory
Loved By Many
Services for June C. Gregory were held Wednesday, August 9, 2000 at Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home.
June Claire Coward Gregory was born to Edith Adele Johnson Coward and Harold Coward on June 1, 1930 in Kings County hospital, Brooklyn.
She attended high school in Brooklyn and shortly after married William Gregory. June spent all of her early life in Brooklyn before relocating to Far Rockaway.
June is survived by one brother, Daniel Coward; five children, Deborah Gregory, Adele Gregory, John Whitner, Harold Whitner, and Joyce Spruill; one granddaughter, Aishia Spruill (Yawnie); two daughters-in-law, Earline Gregory and Patricia Whitner; one son-in-law, Vinny; her grandchildren, Wesley Gregory (Butchie), Donna Gregory (smarty pants), Earline Gregory Asbury (BoBo), Theresa Nadine Gregory (Resa), Shawn Gregory, Dwayne Whitner, Victoria Sutherland (Vicky), Victor Sutherland jr. (Tuff Guy), Shonda Whitner, Douglas Gregory jr., Tracy Sutherland, Aisha Spruill, Shameka Whitner, Tawana Gregory, Tina Gregory, Desiree Whitner, Wesley jr. (Little Wes), Teshia Whitner, Earl Holenquest (Brother), Harold Whitner jr. (Little Howard), Shamel Hollenquest (Little One), Darryl Whitner, Stacey Lawley, Douglas Britt (Doug), James jr. Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inwood was at Forest Green Park Cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey.
Stephen Joseph Hourihan
Far Rockaway Resident
Mass of Christian burial for Stephen Joseph Hourihan was at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Inwood on Monday, August 14, 2000.
Stephen was born in Bantry Bay, Co. Cork, Ireland. He was a resident of Far Rockaway for fifty years.
He worked as an engineer at IS 53, Brian Piccolo School in Far Rockaway before he retired. He died August 10, 2000 at St. John’s Episcopal hospital in Far Rockaway.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Bridget (nee Coyne); one son, Daniel; one daughter-in-law, Felisha, Far Rockaway; two daughters, Kathleen Wetherell, Inwood and Noreen Agatep, Far Rockaway; two son-in laws, Harold Wetherell, Inwood and Elmer Agatep, Far Rockaway; three grandchildren, Stephen Hourihan, Kalene Wetherell and Jennifer Agatep; one brother, Daniel J. Hourihan, Bayonne, NJ; one sister, Mae Hourihan, Bayonne, NJ.
Private services were held under the direction of the Meserole Funeral Home Inc., Inwood at Fresh Pond Cemetery, Middle Village.
Leslie Ward
Inwood Resident
Services for Leslie Ward were held Friday, August 11, 2000 by Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inwood.
Leslie was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 31, 1929 to Sufronia and Joe King. She came to Inwood, where she lived for many years.
She stood four feet eight inches and believed good things came in small packages. After a long illness, Leslie died on August 11, 2000.
Leslie is survived by her sister, Ezella Burnett; two daughters, Stacey ward and Gwendolyn Wright; three grandchildren, Shamel, David, and Andrea; and a host of nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inwood was at Greenfield Cemetery.
