Chatting With Chapey New Year 2001: Best Wishes To All

Chatting With Chapey
New Year 2001: Best Wishes To All

The last few weeks have been opportunities to meet with friends and neighbors and share the good wishes of the season.

The Frank Avenue Civic Association had a wonderful potluck supper. Everyone brought his or her favorite dish. We had a chance to try a variety of foods in a cheerful and friendly atmosphere.  Senator Malcolm Smith (who seems to be everywhere) was enjoying the tasty dishes.  Congressman Gregory Meeks joined the group and sampled the many delicious dishes.  As a Congressman, Gregory Meeks is making his top priority the bringing of economic viability and prosperity to Queens. He feels that economic development is the key to our future prosperity.  Kudos go to Steve Cooper, the president of the Frank Avenue Civic for his leadership of this group and his numerous other community activities.

We also enjoyed attending the annual holiday party sponsored by the Belle Harbor Property Owners, the Neponsit Property Owners and the Rockaway Park Association at the Washington Hotel.  The honorees included Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Herbert Gormley, Albert Ciancimano and Moe Weinshel.  New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik accepted the award for the mayor. Congratulations to all the honorees for their contributions over the many years to our community.

Robert Intelisano was an excellent master of ceremonies. He has enthusiasm and timing, which really add to the program.  A special mention must be made to thank Jack King, the president of the Belle Harbor Property Owners (and his dynamic wife Eleanor); Michael Connors, president of the Neponsit Property Owners; and John McLoughlin, chairman of the Rockaway Park Association, for their efforts on our behalf.  Barbara Larkin also worked to ensure a successful event.

Our club, the Regular Democratic Club of the Rockaways, had a great holiday party. Congressman Anthony Weiner wished everyone well. Senator Malcom Smith brought his good wishes for a happy holiday. Frank Galluscio, a fellow district leader from Howard Beach, enjoyed the festivities.  People gathered from far and near to celebrate the holidays.

Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer sponsored another wonderful holiday party. Audrey always has a great event each year.  Everyone had an opportunity to chat with friends and neighbors and enjoy the excellent food from Elegante at 92-01 Rockaway Beach boulevard.

Barbara Morris, D. Brian Heffernan and Gary Glibboff had a wonderful party at the West End Realty.  Rabbi Joseph Weiss dropped by to offer his good wishes.  Everyone had a great time.  Barbara Morris is definitely a great, effervescent hostess.

Outreach Project, chaired by Kathy Riddle, had a holiday dinner for the Board of Directors at the Bistro Restaurant at 107-21 Metropolitan avenue.  The food was superb.  The service was elegant.

The Catholic Teachers Association had a wonderful dinner at Russo's. Among the distinguished honorees were Gerard McCarthy, the principal of PS 114, and Jerry Cammarata, the commissioner of Youth and Community Development. Kudos to the honorees for their outstanding service to our community.

The Queens Women Democrats had their party at Portofino Restaurant at 109-32 Ascan avenue in Forest Hills. The dinner was delightful.  Mary Lou
and Jamie Plunkett were the hostesses for the evening.  They have a special flair for making an evening successful.  They were joined by our charismatic and outstanding county leader, Congressman Tom Manton. Congressman Joseph Crowley, his wife Casey, and their children hosted a delightful party at the Italian Charities on Queens boulevard.  His parents, his aunt and his brother and sister and their families joined Congressman Crowley.  Since all of the Crowley's are musically gifted everyone spent the night singing and dancing.

Assemblyman William Scarborough hosted an elegant party at the Radisson Hotel.  Senator Malcolm Smith mingled with the group.  Councilman Archie Spigner spread holiday cheer as he greeted everyone.

As I end my column I must compliment Beverly Baxter for her wonderful "On the Beach" column in the December 23, 2000 edition of The Wave. Her suggestion that we support our local stores is excellent.  She was even thoughtful enough to list a variety of stores and the special products that they sell.  Keep the article and refer to it when you want to buy the special birthday, anniversary or house gift.  Thank you Beverly for that wonderful reminder that shopping locally is a great idea.

Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year!
