Cubs, Sharks Attack Stars ‘B’ Team

Nassau County Cubs beat the Stars Squirt "B" team, 2-0, in Long Island Hockey League action on Saturday, December 16.  The game was played at Cantique Park in Westbury.

The Cubs were led by ex-Star John Kiriakos, who had both goals for the winners. Kiriakos picked up the first goal of the game with 3:47 to play in the opening period.  Stationed in the slot, unchecked by the Stars defense, he ripped the puck past goalie Ricky Cibrano, assisted by forward Sider.

Cubs goalie Cirillo was great in net, as he stopped all 17 Stars shots. Kiriakos' second goal of the game came with but one second to play and was an empty netter. The Stars had pulled Cibrano for an extra attacker and the play worked as they controlled the puck in the attacking zone, but the extra skater then tried to stickhandle through two checkers instead of passing the puck deep.  This resulted in a turn over which ended up in the Stars net.

The Stars were overwhelmed by the Staten Island Sharks 11-2 on Sunday, December 17.

The Sharks blasted Stars goalie Anthony Zilahy for seven consecutive goals before left wing Patrick Brown, assisted by center Matt Grogan, beat the Sharks goalie with a great rising shot from the high slot.

The Sharks came back with three more goals against the Stars until Paddy Mead, playing a forward position, beat the goalie with a well-placed high shot.  Mead was assisted by Grogan and Joey Forcina.

The slumping Stars have now scored but four goals in their past four games, which is causing great concern to the coaching staff.
