On The Beach

Still haven't found that perfect gift? Well, it's probably the eve of Christmas Eve so what are you waiting for? There's really no need to venture into the city, unless of course, you have special plans with that special someone to spend Christmas weekend at The Plaza; but if you are still running around in a panic looking for last minute gift ideas, then you can stop in place and look no further. We may not have the well-known chain stores, however, Rockaway does have some lovely "mom and pop" stores that offer great last minute ideas for the holidays.

At this last minute, there's no need to "go over" the bridge about Christmas. Here are some ideas to help you make the holiday more of what it's suppose to be about: Peace.

Maybe you won't find Pashmina on the peninsula, but there are some luxury items you will find. For that art lover in your life, how about an original painting or photograph of the Rockaway seascape by one of our local artists! You can contact Marina Callaghan, Geoff Rawling, Patrick Clarke, or the Rockaway Artist Alliance, or lovely Pottery by Susan Locke. They are listed in the phone book.

Although "diamonds are a girls best friend", you won't find a myriad of selections. There is only one jewelry store that I know of and it’s on the 200 block of Beach 116 street next to the subway. Stop in and see Arlene. She'll be happy to help you.

For electronic items, Robert at Rockaway Beach Hardware has a selection. And for that one who likes to do it themselves, a gift certificate at either Robert's or Brown's is always a useful gift.

Perhaps you know someone who recently bought a computer, but its still in the box because they haven't a clue how to use it? Well, there are several tutors on the peninsula who are expert in giving lessons. You may find their ad in the classified section of The Wave.

For other great gift ideas, how about a membership to Harbor Health & Fitness? They offer a variety of packages for students and limited memberships, personal trainers, etc. For the dancer, the Connelly Dance Center offers great classes in ballet, tap, aerobics, and ballroom dancing. Maybe you know that little one who likes to step out on his or her

own. The Petri School of Irish Step Dancing is still the premier school for Irish cultural dance.

Although we really don't have a perfumerie, Duane Reade has a fine selection of French and American perfume. The Gift is Love has a lovely selection of everything you can imagine from picture frames to Crabtree and Evelyn products, books, Irish crystal and china, and serenity items.

Gift certificates are always practical gifts. A manicure and pedicure at one of our many nail salons is something she can always use. Or, how about a luxurious facial at Irena's House of Beauty?

For "luxury" items, we have Jay and Jay Furriers. Perhaps she or he doesn't need a new coat; however a gift certificate for a beautiful mink hat is a lovely idea, or a gift certificate for cleaning, glazing, or storage is very practical.

For that gourmet cook, you will find a tempting selection of patties, caviar, homemade sauces, fresh cheeses and those hard to find spices at Bon Appetite on Beach 129 street. And for the wine connoisseur, there are fine selections at Harbor Wine, Duffy's, and Station Liquor.

For the athlete, the Rockaway Beach Surf Shop is a must and Tommy Sena is always fun to see and interesting to talk to. Who knows, you might run into Jimmy Breslin shopping for a surfboard?

"Dinner for Two" is a nice gesture of a gift and we certainly have wonderful restaurants to choose from.

***You should have seen little Katrina Marie Gummerman on her way to pre-school this morning at P.S. 225. Dressed in her Burgundy velvet and mary-janes for her school's holiday play, little Katrina looked like Christmas in motion! She is certainly our own "Shirley Temple".

Whatever you decide to give, give love! Happy Holidays!
