Hammels Child Care Center donated cans of nonperishable food to the Claddagh INN this week. Teachers had each child bring in a food item in an effort to make the holidays a happy one for Rockaway’s needy families. Residents should follow the example that these kids are setting and make donations to the various food pantries across the peninsula.

Last Friday, around 8:15 a.m., we observed a driver in a dark blue Oldsmobile, license plate 274194, stop at a red light on Beach 67 street and Rockaway Beach boulevard, look around to make sure there were no cops around, and then zoom through the light. Won’t people ever learn?

High winds on Monday morning closed the Marine Parkway bridge to traffic once again. There was a backup of cars on Beach Channel drive for about a mile, as well as traffic on the Cross Bay bridge after residents realized that the Marine Parkway bridge was closed. We saw this happen last week as well when MTA Bridges and Tunnels closed the bridge for precautionary reasons.

Congratulations to Harbor Health & Fitness proprietor Dr. James Kiernan on the expansion of his gym. The place looks great, with new equipment, a boxing room and a hot yoga area. And as always, there is that wonderful staff that make a trip to the gym worth it all!

Winter officially kicked off this week, and we even had some snow flurries. While we appear to be heading into a really cold winter, we have one thing to look forward to – more daylight. December 21 was the "shortest" day of the year, so from here on we will be increasing daylight hours.

Still need to do some last minute holiday shopping? Then you should read Beverly Baxter’s column for some great gift ideas that can be purchased at our local stores.

As part of our continued commitment to Rockaway’s schools, The Wave is assisting the students and staff of MS 53 in starting a school newspaper. "News In The Schools," a program created by Wave Editor John McLoughlin, has been instrumental in starting newsletters and papers in other schools on the peninsula.

Speeders beware! The police are out and looking to get those offenders who are driving above the posted speed limit -- especially on Cross Bay boulevard and Rockaway Point boulevard. A jaguar was seen being pulled over on Cross Bay boulevard in Broad Channel for doing about 60mph in a 40 mph zone.

Secretary of Education Floyd Flake...Sounds good? President-elect George W. Bush is considering Flake, Rockaway’s former congressman, for the top education job. As of press time, The Wave couldn’t get a confirmation on whether Flake would accept the position.

Happy holidays – Chanukah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa -- to all our readers and neighbors! Have fun, be safe and don’t drink and drive.
