On The Beach...

On The Beach...

A five-four decision, while it is certain to give George Bush the Presidency, it is, however, in no way a clear blessing. There is finality with the Supreme Court Justices' decision, and the country desperately needs to honor and accept the result. Although Al Gore has not conceded as I write this column, it will be President-elect George Bush's speech that will matter most. It will be his ability to heal the deep gashing wounds at the heart of the system. It is now conclusive and the game over.

After being so mesmerized by the current affairs of this election, it is so nice to "come home" and concentrate on the holiday season. There have been many parties going on around town and one has to be really "fit" to keep up! The holiday party hosted by the Neponsit, Belle Harbor, and Rockaway Park Associations, along with the brunch hosted by the Rockaway Action Committee, and the Rockaway Residents, and the Andy Cooney Christmas Concert, were all well attended. T'is the season and, as a community, we have much to be grateful for.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians held their annual installation of officers and Christmas party at Saint Rose of Lima. The new officers for 2001 are President, Patrick Russell; Vice President, Michael Heneghen; Recording Secretary, Dr. Peter Galvin; Financial Secretary, Philip McManus; Treasurer, James Curley; Chairman Standing Committee-Grievance, John F. McManus; Marshall, Joseph McKeon; Sentinel, Dennis Fulton; and Chaplain Father, James Devine. I know many of those elected and wish them all a successful term.

It's always a nice occasion to see Mike and Betty Keller, the Russells, the Galvins, the Fultons, the McManus family, Patrick and Bridget Nee and their family, Mike McCarthy, Maura Toland, and Anne Kirby. I very much enjoyed the company of Mary English and Alice Smith with whom we sat. Cutest moments: when Mrs. Mary O'Connor sat on Santa's lap and that most adorable little Brian McManus who was so mesmerized by it all! Santa was played by none other than John McManus. Shhhh!

Speaking of happenings, there will be a Parade Committee fundraiser hosted by Deputy Grand Marshal Sean Kirby at his new "Hole in the Wall" located on Mickey Carton Way. The benefit will be held Saturday, December 16. Come out and support your parade!

Barbara J. Morris of West End Realty will be hosting her annual holiday party on Friday, December 15. All are invited! Whatever you do and wherever you are able to go, feel that love in your heart and spread the holiday cheer!

In case you were wondering, that is indeed Owen Baxter singing on the airwaves. Turn on your television or radio anytime of day or night and you'll most likely see and hear Owen performing his new CD. His commercials are on CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, E, Lifetime, ESPN, and VH1. You can even hear him on 106.7 Lite-FM radio!

Dr. Geraldine D. Chapey was recently honored by St. Joseph's College at their Christmas Ball at the James Burden Mansion on 91 street and Fifth avenue. The stately mansion is owned by the Madames of the Sacred Heart. Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey gave remarks about her distinguished mother and thanked her for her own development. Anyone who knows Geraldine M. knows why she is affectionately referred to as "Happy Chapey"!
Did you know...that during the 1920s, Groucho Marx knew the value of our hamlet-by-the-sea and owned 25 bungalows in Far Rockaway? Hmmmm!

To get you in the mood, slip into something red or velvet and get into the city to see the tree! Stroll the festive sidewalks of New York and marvel at the holiday window display at Sak's Fifth Avenue. This year's theme is inspired by characters from Colleen Charleston's children's book, "One Enchanted Christmas: A Little Soul's Tale". Then take a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park and then warm up to a roaring fire. It will surely get your holiday spirit up!

Celebrating birthdays this week are Denise Durant, Margie Waters, and Joann Waters. What a party that will be!

Have a beautiful holiday. Remember, you can wrap yourself up in that
feeling in your heart!
