Opportunity For All

Dear Editor;

I had the opportunity to pick up the Summer 2000 issue of the Queens Global Business Outlook publication, which is a fine resource published by The Queens County Overall Economic Development Corporation, at a business luncheon.

The article "Minority-Owned Businesses: A Significant and Growing Sector of the Queens Economy" cites the Rockaways as "the area with the smallest percentage of minority owned firms with six percent." The total number of "minority-owned" business was stated to be 74 i.e. six black, 31 Asian, 30 Hispanic, and seven Indian.

Although I have several opinions, just thought I would share the facts without expressing my analysis. One thing I will say though, I hope as the peninsula experiences transformation and improvement under promising and competent leadership of Senator Malcolm Smith, the (hopefully) new and visionary initiatives of new council members coming in next year, the higher level of access available to Congressman Gregory Meeks, and the advent of new and promising organizations, these numbers will rise.
