Grammar School Teacher Arrested
Charges Are Sodomy, Sexual Abuse

Val Roberts, a P.S. 43 elementary school teacher, was arrested last Friday, November 17 at 2:10 a.m. in his Seagirt avenue apartment for allegedly sodomizing and assaulting his former girlfriend.

According to police, Roberts, 40, still had a key to her apartment and let himself in, allegedly forcing her into a bedroom where he is accused of sodomizing her. Roberts is also accused of slapping and roughing up the 28 year old woman with whom he used to live.

According to detectives, the woman’s son heard an argument between his mother and Roberts over the fact that he still had a key to the apartment. The son reportedly called police who responded while Roberts was still in the apartment. After interviewing the woman, Roberts was placed under arrest by detectives of the 101 Precinct.

Roberts was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Friday where he was charged with sodomy and sexual abuse in the first degree. Bail was set at $75,000 and Roberts remained incarcerated as The Wave went to press Wednesday. According to the Queens District Attorney’s office, Roberts will face his charges at his next court date on December 1, 2000.

The accused was employed as a New York City elementary school teacher at P.S. 43 in Far Rockaway up until the time of his arrest. School Board District 27 refused comment to The Wave, and several calls to the public information arm of the New York Board of Education made Tuesday and Wednesday went unanswered as The Wave went to press.
