Finefare Fire Under Investigation

By Joan Ward George

One firefighter was injured early Sunday morning while battling a three-alarm fire that broke out on the main floor of the Finefare Supermarket, located at 13-36 Beach Channel drive, at approximately 2:20 a.m.

Thirty-three units of fire apparatus along with 138 firefighters responded to the fire scene only to find the entire building engulfed in flames and heavy smoke. Fearing that the 100 by 200 foot structure would collapse from the intense blaze, firefighters attacked the fire from outside the building. Although the fire started to spread to another store, firefighters contained its movement and brought the fire under control by 4:57 a.m.

The injured firefighter sustained a back injury and was treated and released at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.

According to fire department officials, the fire was initially determined to be suspicious in nature and is under investigation.
