Kearney Tigers Take Tennis Champs
Once again, the Bishop Kearney High School tennis team is the Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA diocesan championship team. The teams record for the 2000 season was 10 wins to two losses. Both of these losses were to St. John’s Prep.
The season began with wins against The Mary Louis Academy and Stella Maris. The Tigers played well and fought to achieve a 3-2 win against Mary Louis and a 4-1 win against Stella Maris. The team gained confidence from these early wins and prepared to face St. John’s Prep and Christ The King. After struggling in their matches against St. John’s Prep, the Tigers suffered two defeats. This gave them the determination needed to defeat Christ The King, Fontbonne Hall, St. Saviour’s and Stella Maris during the rest of the season. Coach Elena Gentile and Senior Captain Stephanie Campanella brought their team to 10 victories. However, this record was not enough to finish in first or second place. The Tigers finished in third place, which was their ticket to the place-off match.
The Tigers were off to the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows on October 19. The championship match was against first place St. John’s Prep. Kearney’s tennis team played this match with confidence and determination. Stephanie Campanella, playing first singles, beat her opponent two sets to one. Stephanie’s match was the deciding one, since the Tigers were leading 2-1. The other winners were seniors Erminia Vacirca, playing second singles (two straight sets); Regina Riccio, playing third singles (two sets to one) and second doubles team Cathy Pesce and Rosalba Mini (two sets to one). The final score against St. John’s Prep was 4-1.
According to coach Elena Gentile, "The Tigers played the match of their lives. I am very proud of them."
