Has Anyone Seen Joe?

Dear Editor;

Joe Kelly is the son of the late Patrick Kelly, a founder of the Rockaway Irish American Society. Many of us would like to locate Joe to let him know how indebted we are to him for all he’s done for us as youths.

In approximately 1994, when there was a tree planting ceremony for Patrick Kelly at Surfside Houses, on which grounds the original Irish American hall stood, I spoke to Joe’s sister. She told me Joe was living on the west coast, either in Oregon or Washington. I forget which.

In the mid 50’s, Joe dedicated all of his free time and a lot of his money to a bunch of us teens living in the Holland, Hammels and Seaside areas to organize us into an athletic/social club. We were know as the Rockaway Knights and formed teams that played various sports in organized leagues.

Through his efforts and dedication, we got through adolescence with many fond memories and fewer scraps. We never quite thanked him for all of his hard work, and belatedly, would love to do so.
