Congratulations to our local incumbents who swept the local districts with votes of confidence. Hard work reaps its just rewards. They have worked hard to bring recognition and increased improvements to the Rockaways, although there is still a great deal to be done. Just keep up the good work and try to fulfill those promises and deep desires for the betterment of our community. Go guys go!

Mia Hamm, the most recognized soccer player in the world who broke the all-time international scoring record for men and women against Brazil in Orlando in 1999, joined the rest of her Olympic award soccer team at the Essex House press luncheon last week to announce the first WUSA (Women’s United Soccer Association) combined to take place December 4 in Boca Raton, Florida. It was an exhausted nationwide search for the final pool of players. Without question, the time is right for a women’s professional league, especially with sponsors such as Johnson and Johnson, Time Warner, The Discovery Channel, and TLC. The official healthcare supplier will air on TNT and CNN/Sports Illustrated beginning in April. Many other big companies have declared sponsorship as well. Team names were unveiled, and logos and stadiums for its eight teams starting in April. Sara Whalen, who played the last three summers with the Long Island Lady Roughriders of the United Soccer Leagues W-League, was among the soccer award winning team. Perhaps some of you have seen her play. "We’ve come a long way, baby!" In my day as a sports active female, I would have loved the opportunity to play basketball professionally or at least compete in the Olympics. We still have an uphill battle but we are making progress as more opportunities open up for talented and gifted and sports goal oriented women.

Popular Science Magazine’s November 14 issue features "Best of What’s New." They held their award winning products and technologies at Tavern on the Green. It was fascinating! A camera in a capsule... swallowing a pill and it travels through your digestive system, while snapping several images per second along the way. Eventually it will replace many uncomfortable and unpleasant endoscopic procedures.

The smallest spacecraft ever flown...the size of a deck of cards.

Instant digital camera that can spit out photographic Polaroid prints in 15 seconds.

Solo water skiing. No need for others to help. Solo goes where you want it to with controls and throttle on the tow handle.

Cadillac PC infotainment...It includes navigation and CD based maps, reads e-mail, and responds to voice activated commands that can post simple replies.

Robotic helper... a camera, microphone and speaker along with the ability to control it anywhere in the world via standard web browser. Monitor the house, hold a conversation with a spouse, chase a toddler around. It naturally avoids obstacles and can go up and down stairs. When it gets arms maybe it can clean the bathroom.

A camera that’s small enough to put into your pocket. This $699 4.4 megapixel camera by Fuji’s fine pix 40i can store a hours worth of music and can record and store 80 seconds of video.

A Sunbeam division called Thalia introduced an alarm clock that starts the coffee maker, turns off the electric blanket, wakes you and gives you the up to the minute weather report. It also keeps the family schedules, downloads recipes and suggests menus.

Fall fashion trends redefine luxury casual wear... it is cashmere and fur-trimmed separates according to Gus Goodman, one of the nation’s top furriers. You’ll find them in the Buonuomo Sports Collection designed by David Goodman. If you can’t afford Gus Goodman’s fashions get out your old minks, sables and fox and cut them up to trim your finest cashmeres, separates and matching ensembles in a range of colors from palest pastels to rich jewel tones. To keep your finest cashmeres, don’t dry-clean them. Place them in your washing machine on the cold-water mildest cycle and do not machine dry. Remove from spin cycle and lay on a towel to dry. Your cashmeres will thank you.

The RAA should be interested in the Yvelyne Wood show. The Age of Extreme...Barbarism and Human Rights in the 20-Century. She is a sculptor, artist and painter and her works are on display at the Stendahl Gallery, 386 West Broadway, until December 2.

Great time of the year for a drive Upstate not only to see the beautiful foliage but also to watch a football game. That’s what Cathy McCormack, her daughter Kathleen, husband Tommy Keane and Richard Coyne did when they took a trip to West Point last week for the Army game... tailgating and all. It was fun to me she told her friend, Micki Frappallo, at Kennedy’s.

Carolann Sizemore just returned from New Zealand and Australia and is now off to Egypt. (She is a professional tour guide.) I hope she is being cautious. The State Department has issued warnings to avoid that part of the world if possible. Too much conflict and terrorists attacks.

When checking in to register for the Javits Center Furniture Show, a gal called Tasmania from Far Rockaway recognized me and told me she reads The Wave faithfully and loves it. Hope she finds her name in this column this week. Every year some of the best furniture stores display their finest for the designers and retail shops. This year was no different only it seemed a little larger and more elegant. Baccarat was a glistening exhibit with its beautiful glass pieces, table settings and magnificent chandeliers. At another booth, I found those modern artsy chairs, while another displayed antiques that fascinated me with their most unusual lamps that stood tall hanging on right angles from antique poles. They might look quite handsome in front of a doorway. At a show like this you just want everything.

A brand new Sohora store opened across the street from Macy’s, which makes it quite convenient for shoppers. Sophora is a huge cosmetic and fragrance store for men and women where you can try before you buy. Everything is at your fingertips for looking and testing. Their grand opening was quite festive. They served those delicious apple martinis, which certainly helped my congested lungs. The Sophora stores are now very strategically located in Rockefeller Center, Broadway and Times Square, So Ho and now 34 street.
