A Stinkin’ Nightmare
As I was standing on the platform awaiting the A Express to Manhattan this morning, the topic of conversation was the Department of Sanitation. Yesterday was an Election Day, a holiday for most city agencies including the Sanitation Department. We were told by The Wave and the Daily News what was open and closed. We were told to put the garbage out Tuesday night for Wednesday pickup, no recyclables until the following week. As I was in my second dream, I hear what sounded like a garbage truck coming down the street picking up our garbage. The time was 12:50 am. Most people in Rockaway are working families, some of which work all night or all day and have to get up and out to work in the morning and here we have the Department of Sanitation picking up our garbage at that hour in the morning. The Carting companies at least wait until 5a.m. to pick up commercial garbage as not to disturb the people in the neighborhood.
I called the Department of Sanitation in the Arverne section and asked to speak to the supervisor to register my complaint. He said that the night supervisor was responsible and that he really didn't know who he was. He also informed me that it was on the schedule weeks ago that the garbage was to be collected at that time. I told him of my complaint and asked for an address on whom to contact within the department as to write a letter. There was the wall of silence from the Department of Sanitation. No names.
We in Rockaway have been patient in many ways and I feel that we have to get this under control, as it has happened one too many times.
