Colonials Defeat Stars ‘B’ Team
Stars "B" team hosted the New Jersey Colonials at the Abe Stark arena in Coney Island, New York. The Colonials defeated the mistake prone Stars 5-3 on Sunday, October 22.
The Stars scored first with 2:24 remaining in the opening period, as right wing Charlie Gotard put his own rebound home, assisted by his line mate Michael Davie. Thirty seconds later it was 1-1 as D. Nichols of the Colonials beat Stars goalie Ricky Cibrano.
The Stars took a 2-1 lead 2:06 into the middle stanza as center Matt Grogan converted some sharp passes from defenseman Matt DiBitetto and winger Jesse Wynn.
The Colonials made it 2-2 at the 3:57 mark when T. Simmons picked off a poor cross ice pass and scored on a breakaway. The stunned Stars then gave Simmons another goal just 12 seconds later, as they failed to clear the slot.
The Stars made it 3-3 39 seconds into the final period, when their high scoring winger Timmy Faruol took a beautiful pass from defenseman Michael Strenk and broke through the Colonials defense. His shot found the right post and bounced to center Michael Kress who put the puck home. But that was to be the last positive note for the Stars as they surrendered two goals within three minutes to go down to defeat.
The Stars’ Joey Forcina played his best game of the pre-season and looks ready to have a solid year on defense. Stars goalie Ricky Cibrano looked very sharp in net stopping 15 of 16 shots.
The Colonials outshot the Stars 33-19 and simply outworked the Stars after the first period.
The Stars "B" team closed out their final preseason game losing to the Staten Island Sharks "A" team 5-0 in a game played at the Clove Lake arena in Staten Island, New York.
The Sharks completely dominated the game, out shooting the Stars 32-9. The Sharks went up 1-0 at 3:12 of period one as Merendino, assisted by Giallanza and Shapiro, beat Stars goalie Anthony Zilahy from down low. Just over two minutes later it was 2-0 for the Sharks as Giallanza beat Zilahy assisted by Merendino. 2:50 into period two the score went to 3-0 as Lopes beat Zilahy with a long backhander, unassisted. With under 2:00 to play in the middle period, Merendino made it 4-0 beating Stars goalie Ricky Cibrano, assisted by Shapiro and Lopes. Walsh made it 5-0, 4:20 into the last period, assisted by Blackburn.
This was a rough game with the Sharks taking 11 penalties to four for the Stars.
