Stars Fight Off Hurricanes
On Saturday, October 7, 2000, the Stars rode the offensive power of center Jimmy Ketterer's hat trick, outstanding team defense and the shutout goaltending of Ricky Cibrano and Anthony Zilahy to defeat the Hackensack New Jersey Hurricanes 7-0.
The Hurricanes outshot the Stars 11-6 in the opening period, but it was the Stars who took a 1-0 lead 13:23 into the period, as defenseman Michael Strenk wrested home a long shot from the left point. He was assisted by Ketterer and forward Michael Davie. 1:58 into the second period Ketterer scored assisted by Davie. It was a power play goal. Less than three minutes later it was 3-0 for the Stars, as Ketterer took a pass from center Michael Kress and beat the Hurricane goalie.
The Stars went up 4-0 at 6:26 of the period as forward Patrick Brown scored unassisted from down low in the slot. 2:58 into the final period found the Stars on the board again, as Kress snapped home the puck unassisted. It was another power play goal. Kress nailed another goal at the 10:02 mark, converting a great pass from his left wing Timmy Faruol.
The final goal came but with 13 seconds to go and was the Stars third power play goal of the contest. The goal was scored by Ketterer giving him his hat trick, but was the culmination of a tremendous rush by defenseman Patty Mead.
Also, picking up his third assist of the game, on the play, was Davie.
In addition to the fine offensive work by Ketterer, Kress and Davie, the Stars received solid two way play from forwards Matt Grogan, Kenny Fiorentino, Michael Scotko, Jesse Wynn, defensemen Matt DiBitetto, Joey Forcina, Charlie Gotard and Nicky Vitale.
The Stars goalie Cibrano and Zilahy stopped 21 Hurricane shots, while the Stars scored on seven of 26 attempts.
Sunday, October 8, 2000 the Stars hosted the Rebels of Dix Hills, New York at the Abe Stark arena in
Coney Island. The Stars completed a successful weekend as they
beat the Rebels 5-1.
Stars center Matt Grogan, taking two beautiful passes from his wingers Patrick Brown and Kenny Fiorentino, scored at the 7:06 mark of period one, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Stars put the game away in the second period as they scored three unanswered goals. Winger Timmy Faruol put home a rebound of a blast from the right point from
the stick of defenseman Matt DiBitetto. Just six seconds later, Faruol took a pass from his center Michael Kress, broke through the Rebel defense and found the net with his hard shot.
The Stars then went up 4-0 at the 6:33 mark. Grogan, hitting his left wing Fiorentino in stride over the middle of the neutral zone. Fiorentino sped around the defense and nailed a great low shot just inside of the right post.
The Rebels capitalized on a Stars defensive breakdown scoring at 6:41 of period three. Bertolino, assisted by Dymski, beat Stars goalie Ricky Cirbano over the left shoulder. Late in the period, Grogan picked up his second goal and third point of the game, scoring from down low, assisted by Brown and defenseman Patty Mead.
The Stars' coaches were very pleased with the forechecking play of forwards Michael Kress, Michael Scotko, Michael Davie, Jesse Wynn and the defensive play of defensemen Charlie Gotard, Matt DiBitetto and Michael Strenk.
