School Choice For All

Dear Editor;

As we move into the new century, I think it is important for us as a community to look to new and innovative ways to improve our education system. Having attended both public and private schools in our district, I feel we are not allowing parents in our district a fair choice regarding the education of their children.

The New York State Assembly has a bill that would allow working families a $1500.00 per child tax credit if parents choose to send their child to a private school. The tax credit would not just be targeted for private school tuition, but for computers and tutoring as well. Families in our community need to prepare their children for the future. The proposed education tax credit bill needs support in the Assembly, since interest groups are fighting to keep parents from having the same choices as wealthy families.

Many people in our community send their children to private school, and, at the same time, are taxed too heavily. This is an instance where a tax credit is a sensible step for our State Assembly. We need someone that will fight for those kinds of education reforms.

I believe education is something so valuable, we need to make every choice possible for working families. Excellent education should not be solely for the very wealthy.
