Stabile Outraged! ‘Disgrace To Burn American Flag’
‘Disgrace To Burn American Flag’
Councilman Alfonso Stabile expressed his outrage at the United States Senate and its action on an amendment that would protect the American Flag from being burned as a sign of protest. The Flag Protection Amendment was defeated in the United States Senate by four votes this past March.
"It is a disgrace to burn the American Flag in protest," Stabile said. "I do not consider anyone who burns the American Flag to be a true American. There is a First Amendment right, but I believe that the American Flag is above this amendment which protestors hide behind when they put fire to the greatest symbol on earth."
Stabile, a Vietnam Veteran, urged the Senate to vote on the bill once again and protect a symbol that "thousands of Americans gave their lives for in the battles our country has fought for freedom."
"The American Flag is a greater symbol then the Crucifix or the Star of David," Stabile said. "I say this because what the American Flag stands for gives people the right to openly worship these symbols without fear of oppression. No other country has stood for these ideals as strongly or as long as the United States of America. As a result, our symbol, our flag, must be protected from desecration as part of protest."
