Chris Cori Tourney Raises Funds For Child
The 15th Annual Chris Cori Memorial Softball Tournament was held recently at Riis Park. This event continues to raise money for children through the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the name of Chris Cori, whose family have been Rockaway residents for many years.
Fittingly, in a year where all proceeds went to benefit a sick child of a former teammate and friend of Chris Cori, it was Chris' former squad, the Sad Sox, who came away with the tournament championship. Led by the power hitting of Billy and Kenny Collins and the strong defense of Timmy Perrone and Kevin Kennedy, the Sad Sox beat Waterview Car Care in the title game.
In the family division, it was the Carey family taking the title in a great final game against the Cori's. At press time Big Mike McCarthy was still waiting for his team to show up.
The total amount raised was the highest in the history of the event. As usual, the Rockaway community pulled together in a huge way when needed.
Tournament organizers Mike and Vinny McCarthy, along with Walter "Dancer" Rogers, wish to thank all of the generous sponsors, especially: Irish Circle - Jerry and Frankie; Rockaway Rockies; Jameson's - Jamie, Eric, and Marty; Harbor Light; Healy's; and a special thank you to some folks who worked tirelessly all day: Patricia Daly, Siobhon Mullen, and Donna Mullen.
