Safe, Sensible Bus Service

Previously we’ve called for the elimination of either the Q35 bus route between Beach 116 street and Beach 149 street or the elimination of the Q22 bus route along the same stretch. We don’t see the need for duplication of service on these two routes since they are not heavily utilized.

Additionally, we have been watching the route of the Q22 east of Beach 116 street. There is a clear and present danger to the public as the Q22 makes its way east of Beach 116 street. The narrow street along Rockaway Beach boulevard makes it impossible for drivers to safely pass a stopped bus without crossing the double yellow line and facing on-coming traffic.

Solution: Simple. Just terminate the Q22 bus at Beach 108 street (eastbound). Passengers that wish to travel eastbound on the Q22 could get on the bus at any of the westbound stops between Beach 108 street and Beach 116 street. The bus would continue westbound along the Boulevard since the street is wide enough for parking and bus stops. The bus would reach 116 street and loop around as does the Q53. It would stop in front of the supermarket on Beach Channel drive and then at Beach 108 street and Rockaway Beach boulevard as it continues eastbound.

With a little bit of thought, Rockaway could become a model for sensible transportation routes.
