Don’t Kill The System

Would the world be a better place if there were no choices? Here in Rockaway we’ve faced that situation many times during the time of a general election. In an area where Democrats outnumber Republicans by at least seven to one, once a name is placed on the Democratic line in an election it is as good as being elected–appointed–crowned–or any other way one would like to call the election.

Now City Councilman Noach Dear wants to take it one step further. The councilman has been given the nod to run against Congressman Anthony Weiner in the general election in November. Dear has the Republican line, Evidently the councilman does not feel that he can win with the Republican line. He feels that in order to be assured of victory in November he must run against Congressman Anthony Weiner in the Democratic primary and beat him there, thus ensuring himself of election in November.

We understand his strategy. This will make it a sure thing in the November election if Dear beats Weiner in the primary.

But that about the voters? Don’t they deserve a choice? This isn’t some Communist country where only one name appears on the ballot. Let Mr. Dear have his Republican line in the November election. Let Me. Weiner have his Democratic line in the November election. Let the voters decide whether they would rather see Republican Dear elected or Democratic Weiner elected. We think the voters are smart enough to make the right decision. Let’s not take the decision away from them. Let the voters decide in November!
