Is Anyone Listening?

Dear Editor;

Just thought I'd write in and voice some of my opinions on a few matters
that I believe effect us all here in Rockaway Beach. First of all I really
don't like talking politics or religion but some of what I talk about
probably has political roots and God only knows what lurks in the minds of the local politicians. It seems that the powers that be decided to spend some of our tax dollars on trees along Shore Front parkway. Sure they were
supposed to spruce up the neighborhood but the idea failed terribly. The
trees are almost all dead due to no irrigation in the center median and I
only saw a water truck out there once to water them right after they were
planted. According to another reader who had voiced in earlier about this,
the trees should have been planted in the dormant season and not in the
summer as they were. So now, the trees are starting to look like an eyesore instead of an improvement, and at the taxpayer’s expense the trees will have to be removed and or replaced very soon.

Unfortunate waste of money wouldn't you think? I think so. Not to mention, but let mention this anyway….that with the trees in place it now causes motor vehicle traffic to have very bad blind spots when making both left and right turns along this area. I'd like to know how many accidents have already been caused by these new blind spots along
S.F.P. I'm sure that there have been some accidents directly caused by the new almost dead trees.

Anyway, maybe whomsoever it is that makes these decisions that directly affects the community will ask the community if in fact they want
trees or the like and have some input into the process of decision making.

The other thought I'd like to convey is about the garbage on the boardwalk. Who pray-tell had the bright idea to have the garbage cans removed from the boards to the sand? Not that I really care exactly who, but the fact is that we must endure loose trash as we stroll or jog along this beautiful area. Is this to feed the rats that we have living underneath? With all the people that frequent our lovely beachfront and with all the concession stands, there is just no where to discard food and wrappers without having to go down on
the sand or come off to Shore Front. Some people just can't go out on the
sand due to disabilities or other reasons and many others just don't care, so they let their garbage blow in the wind in hopes that it doesn't end up on the mainland in front of their doors.

I for one am appalled by some of the states of affairs that go on here in Rockaway. I love this place and am not going anywhere, although sometimes I feel like running away. How about it Powers That Be….get your acts together.

Is anyone listening?
