Dorothy Dunne…

She was a "Honey" of a gal.

Honey O"Farrell, a well loved and admired fellow columnist at the other local free summertime newspaper called The Pointer has penned her last column and now writes about us in the sky. Honey an honorary Ziegfield girl was a real showgirl at heart; always ready to perform. She was full of fun and high spirit. Honey wrote an upbeat column and was all over the community gathering bits and pieces of neighborhood happenings. If there was a soiree’ or event Honey was there to give her slant on it and add news items regarding the guests. We knew her health was in serious trouble when her columns failed to appear this summer. You will be long remembered Honey, and your columns greatly missed. I give a final salute to a very special columnist who can never be replaced. Be at peace, Honey. You did a super job keeping us abreast of events and bringing joy to your loyal readers. Honey’s husband passed several years ago. Whatever family is left my condolences to them.

Congratulations to Rene’ Lacey who has been elected president of the Golden Age Club at St. Thomas More church. Rene’ is a bright, bright gal and I know she will breathe new life into the Golden Agers. She has many things planned on the agenda so get over there and join up if you haven’t already. There is a great time to be had.

Therese Bennett is the chairlady of the BPSC Annual Show this year, which is being directed by Maryellen Barnes. They are still recruiting and looking for you and your talent. You do have to be a member, however, those of you who are there is still room for you to join. But, hurry, tempest flees.

BPSC BOCCE: Claire and John Hughes are still in the money revving up for Guys and Dolls match. Winnie and Bill Killips stepped up on the winner’s ladder in Honeymooners this past weekend and all Bocce players are nearing the final scores.

Sheryl Hughes, wife of Billy and daughter-in-law of Claire and John Hughes had a happy birthday celebration with her husband, mother and father-in-law and two children, Lauren and Valerie with cabana cocktails and great Italian food at a local Rockaway restaurant replete with birthday cake and candles. Congratulations Sheryl.

Kennedy’s is still brimming with Sunday brunchers. And, among them were that magnetic married twosome, Loretta and Chuck Gregory still touting the marvelous remedies of the purity magnetic mattress. Seems to cure all ills. Whatever it does, it works. Since they placed them on their bed they have been in the peak of health free of pains and aches. (No more wifely headaches either). We spoke about the new spa along Rockaway Park strip where Janet’s salon and the Physical Therapy are located. Loretta is an electrolysis operator and former owner of her own New York shop for many years. She might think of taking that up there again. I failed to mention in last week’s column the spa will have an indoor pool…No need to go all the way out to Lawrence anymore. Now, if they would only add a movie house and other things mentioned in last week’s editorial, we would be almost self contained. Who knows, with a few more enterprising people we may turn out to be an attractive village…possibly in demand.

The Meeting World Expo was at the New York Hilton last week and St. Petersburg Visitors and Convention Bureau held a dinner for their meeting planners and press at the newly renovated Russian Tea Room. Need I tell you the meal was fabulous, served one of their luxurious upper banquet rooms. For starters a delightful seafood in pastry followed by a sensational seasoned rack of lamb, all with accompanied red and white wines. A perfectly prepared crème brulee’ was the finale. When the meal was completed we were all taken on tour of their most exquisite rooms with Tiffany stained glass ceilings and beveled and sculptured very expensive mirrors on the walls. This is a must see. Save your pennies and give yourself a treat. It is breathtakingly beautiful.

At the dinner we were introduced to the best meeting places in and around St. Petersburg such as the Hilton Resort and other various properties. All excellent and prepared to offer the best service to their guests and to make your meetings flawless. It is a less thought of destination but the St. Petersburg CVB is well prepared to meet your demands. Very attractive properties with popular activities on hand. Keep it in mind.

At lunch at the Rainbow Room, Disney Cruise Line launched their seven-day cruise out of Port Canaveral. From the video and live presentation it should be a fabulous cruise..not only for children of all ages who will have special programs in all age categories but also for the adults. Adults’ only sections are reserved for them only. The children are cared for and served special children’s meals from 3 and up from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with sitters available for later evening hours. If you wish to travel with an infant caretakers are there for you as well. Of course Minnie and Mickey Mouse, along with other Disney characters are ever present at children’s meals. Teen discos and games and activities are all at your fingertips to keep this special group happy. The entertainment is spectacular and if you are a family who wish to travel together by all means this is the way to go. Adjoining rooms and oversized cabins to accommodate guards or suites are yours for the asking. Do look into it for a great family time. There are still a few holiday cabins available but hurry, they’re going fast.
