There were two great Irish bands playing to a meager crowd and a few vendors selling their Irish items and art works though not as many as other years at the Irish Festival this past Saturday. The crowd did swell a bit by evening but certainly not the turn out of other years. Whether this was due to too many Irish Festivals in too short a time or to the weather is not known. However, I think the committee members might smart to pick another location at a different time of year.
While there I dropped into Snug Harbor and met Tom Connors for dinner. We chose the corn beef featured for the day for the day for the festival and because I have it so seldom. It was lean and tender with a special "Frankie" spice to enhance the flavor. His New England clam chowder was a treat as starters, as well.
Paul Fitzpatrick was at the other table dining with Eileen Delaney. He just so happened to have a picture of him and his friends from last year’s celebration of his return from Florida for a quick Rockaway vacation taken at Silver Gull.
The reason I am running this picture this year is because the Silver Gull’s La Pergola Restaurant is closed for the first time this year for the summer season. I remember it well, when it’s hey day The Maitre’d Edgar was in charge. And what a job he did. He made sure the food and service was excellent. It all came out on rolling carts so that the waiter could toss your salad in front of you, flambé and cut your perfectly prepared meat and vegetables within your view and of course those flaming desserts were to die for. Their wine cellar was one of the best and your most desired bottle was always available for you. That was so many years ago, of course, before the casualty of the club took over. No more do people want to dress for dinner at the beach. With mom and dad both working simple casual clothes are the order and most are happy with deli snacks. La Pergola the Trellis as it was named is a bright sunny delightful room with green and white attractive trellis wallpaper with a view overlooking the pool and ocean. Very pleasant and very elegant, it was in days gone by a match for any of Manhattan’s finer restaurants. Though La Pergola is closed for a las carte dining, it is still open for special functions large or small. As a matter of fact I attended a wedding at the Silver Gull and found it done so beautifully I thought I should remarry…until I gave it deeper thought and realized that it is not the best reason to remarry.
Katzy Pilgrim is returning to Rockaway from Wellington, Florida for a short summer visit with friends this week. We are all happy she is well and hope to see you around, Katzy.
Since Kennedy’s expanded their restaurant with all encased glass it has been doing a booming business. People come from all over to enjoy the view. This weekend two very attractive and very tall gals came all the way from the big city. They loved looking across at the New York skyline and of course the delightful meeting with KCB’s (Kennedy’s Corner Bachelors or if you prefer ask a Kennedy’s Crime Busters. I was delighted to see Bob Zelek walking with a cane. He just had a hip replacement about a month ago and seems to be doing great. Can’t wait to him kick up his heels in his Scottish kilt.
Spas are the big attraction these days. Wonder why we don’t have a spa in Rockaway Park. Well, just you wait till fall. Those stores next to the physical therapy office up to Columbia bank will be turned into one big spa with the latest facilities for massages, facials, mud baths, etc. And the last shop will be your makeover station at Janet’s new place. Every week some one comments on French manicured or designed nails by Janet. Gary will join her and by now you should know Gary is my colorist and stylist who keeps my blonde locks locked in with color and shine and accompanied by a short, easy to manage hairdo. You’ll get all right on the Rockaway Park strip, a block away from Keyfood. Everyone will be gorgeous and healthy and the envy of the other towns. Can’t wait to see it.
