Best Of The G-Man
Property Weasels Among Us

(G-Man has taken a little hiatus, so The Wave presents "Best Of The G-Man". This column is from The Wave July 29, 1999 edition. Don’t sweat -- the G-Man will return to the pages of The Wave in a few weeks.)

Hey people! I want to take a moment to issue a special alert. I’m in a real foul mood this week, and this installment will not be for the weak at heart. I’m taking no prisoners, and I’m making no apologies. This will not be pretty by any means. So, get ready because the G-man is about to set it off.

A few issues ago, I ripped into the local politicians for letting Far Rockaway businesses lapse into a barren wasteland. Buildings are left to deteriorate, and there are no immediate plans to try and correct the situation. Well, on July 24, we were reminded of this horrible fact when two beautiful people lost their lives to falling debris. Theresa and Melissa Ramlochan, a mother and daughter, died tragically, while some of the most upstanding people in the community tried valiantly to save them.

Their deaths serve as a reminder of what can happen when these property "weasels" put profit before people. They charge these ridiculous prices for renting the properties, but when it comes time to maintain them, they drag their damn feet or do nothing at all. It has to come to a point where they are issued a number of summonses before they act. Some of them are even issued an ordinance from the courts to comply with the city’s regulations. How does the city allow this to happen, and when is this bull going to stop? Why do people have to die in order to have some type of action taken?

It would be a big mistake to think that this was an isolated incident. Far Rockaway is full of buildings that appear to be on the verge of collapse. John McLoughlin reported last week that the Seaside buildings, along Shore Front parkway, were crumbling, and they posed a serious threat to many of the residents. One can only imagine how many other potential disasters are out there waiting to occur. It’s really pathetic!

I want to serve notice to people like the Zukermans and all of the other property owners throughout the Rockaways. You’d better get your acts together or you too will have blood on your hands. Stop acting like a bunch of real estate vampires and do what you’re supposed to do for your tenants.

Moreover, I want to extend a special message to the Starks. They are the owners of the properties surrounding Thriftway Drugs along the Mott avenue strip in Far Rockaway. There are numerous reports as to why many of those dilapidated buildings in the mall are allowed to remain after all these years. Some say it’s because of family bickering, and others say it’s a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo. Whatever, it’s all a bunch of crap to me. There is no good reason to have all of that property go to waste. Cultural centers, computer training facilities, trade schools, day care facilities or some new small businesses could be provided with the chance to flourish in the place of what has become a constant eyesore over the years. Are you that selfish, to not consider what is in the best interest of Far Rockaway inhabitants? Has greed surpassed the need to help improve the community? If so, it’s pretty sad. Many people in the area are tired of watching this section of Far Rockaway deteriorate, and I am one of them. I’ll simply put it like this. If you don’t plan to make use of the property in the Rockaway, then you need to get the hell out of the Rockaways. The people deserve better.

I was appalled at the fact that our local politicians were a no show during the tragic building collapse. I don’t even recall one of them calling a press conference to at least express some degree of sympathy for the victims. Even the mayor, "Rudy Poo" stiffed us. Funny how if this had occurred in Lawrence, Hewlett, Douglaston or Valley Stream, he would have been right there to offer his sympathies. I guess the only time you can count on them to come around is during an election year. That’s when they need you, and they show up kissing babies and kissing big-time booty. These are the people who are supposed to "represent"? I’ve got a special "Jacky" award for each of you. Thanks for showing how much you care.

Finally, I want to serve up some sweet justice. I was informed, by a witness to the incident, of something that happened shortly after the building collapsed. When the victims had been confirmed dead, their bodies were covered with white sheets as people began to pray. It was at this time that a fat, frumpy female dog came forth and said, and I quote, "Man....their families are going to get paid." I hope you read this ....you pathetic piece of trash! You, and your ghetto attitude, are what destroys our people. How could you even think of saying something like that at that given time? If I’d been there to hear that, I would’ve spit in your face! Seeing how you were unsympathetic, callous and just plain stupid, maybe you should consider a career in politics or property ownership. You’d fit right in; especially in Far Rock.

Please pray for the victims and family, and I’ll see you next week.
