I am in support of boardwalk vendors displaying their wares as a special event. The merchants of Beach 116th street should embrace the idea that out-of-towners, who may not usually travel to Rockaway, would take advantage of such an event and park on Beach 116 street and pass by their stores. Merchants should use this opportunity to showcase their wares by setting up a table on the boardwalk as well.
Vendors and visitors have been flocking to the shores of Long Beach as a semi-annual event for many years now (and talking about revitalization of an entire city!). Does it take business away from the Beech street stores or Park street stores? Well, the visitors who flock the shores have to pass by their stores. Maybe they'll stop by a restaurant on the way to or from the boardwalk. Maybe they'll stop by to pick up a sweatshirt or a hot cup of coffee. They'll remember the congenial attitudes of the shopowners and workers and want to return again soon.
Don't use such a wonderful opportunity for all Rockaway merchants and out-of-town visitors to be so self centered. It could backfire. Why don't merchants rent a table and give away a coupon which can redeemed in their store? Use some intelligence on this one.
