Do you want an arts center established in our community? Well, do you? You can help us achieve this goal while having a great evening for yourself. RAA is holding its third annual building fund benefit the evening of Saturday, July 1. For only $30 per ticket you get a delicious dinner, including beer, wine and soda, catered by The Beach Club, live music performed by the Moran Brothers and the Acappella Group, The Notediggities, from Poly Prep. You will dance to your heart’s content on building T-149’s large dance floor while whirling past the terrific RAA artwork surrounding you. You will also have a chance to win some of that artwork in raffles. Seriously, where can you get all that for only $30? And to ease these guilty pleasures, you will be contributing to a most worthy cause. But you must contact RAA immediately if you wish to buy tickets, in order for the caterer to plan correctly. So do yourself and your community a favor. Call us or e-mail us at rockart116@aol.com.

Several will be honored at this year’s event. Borough President Claire Shulman is named Leader of the Year. Educator of the Year is Patricia J. Tubridy from ALPS at Middle School 180. Citizen of the Year is Dan Tubridy, for his great generosity to RAA and, in turn, to the community. This year’s Gateway honoree is Breezy Point Site Manager Alexcy Romero. Susan Friedman Memorial Award recipients are kidsmART teen assistants Dwayne Green and Gaby Cryan, for their spirit and leadership qualities. RAA Member of the Year is Karen McCallion, for writing and designing our monthly newsletter and for the many other tasks she generously and most competently performs. Karen is one of those special people who does her work with such quiet efficiency and generosity of spirit, that she may, at times, be overlooked when public accolades are handed out. Thank you, Karen for all you do for this organization and for me, personally, and thank you for your friendship. All are priceless.

So, spend the evening of July 1 with some of the most fun people west of the Louvre in one of the most beautiful settings you can imagine—Fort Tilden at sunset. The evening starts at 7:00.

P.S. Be prepared for some great surprises.

Rockaway Artists Alliance takes great pleasure in congratulating Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer on her recent appointment as executive director of the Queens Council on the Arts. Krakauer, a former member of RAA, is a woman of great accomplishment in many areas. She brings intelligence, energy and creativity to her new position. She is a strong friend of the arts and the artist. At last week’s QCA annual meeting, Krakauer spoke eloquently of "empowering" arts and artists so they may become forces that "can move all of us forward."

Congratulations go equally to Liz Sulik, who was sworn in as a new member of QCA’s board of directors. Sulik is well known to Rockaway as, among many other positions, program chair of the 100 Precinct Community Council and first vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce. Good luck and best wishes to both these accomplished women.

RAA’s "sTudio-6" gallery hours have been expanded to coincide with other Fort Tilden events. Our member exhibition is on view through July 2 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 7-10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 12-4 p.m. The gallery will also be open 6-10 p.m. on Monday June 26, the evening of the Shloime Dachs concert. Neil Simon’s "Rumors" runs through July 1 at the Post Theater. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. So treat yourself to the full benefit of the growing arts and enrichment center that is Fort Tilden, Gateway National Recreation Area.

Please note that the deadline to submit applications to RAA’s October Millennium Festival has been extended to July 1.

RAA member Eileen Bledsoe’s mother passed away last weekend. To Eileen and her family we send our love and our deepest sympathy.

We include this week, some loving last photos of our kidsmART program. To all who participated—our thanks and our admiration. Enjoy.
