Ruth Morris Blount
From Inwood

Service for Ruth Morris Blount was held on Friday, June 2, 2000, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, of Far Rockaway.
Ruth was born in Keysville, Georgia, to the late Clarence Morris and Hattie Walker Morris. She married Robert Henry Blount in 1923 in Keysville, and to this union five children were born: William Henry, Robert L., Irene, Vivian, and Joseph.
In 1947, Ruth moved with her husband and her youngest child to Inwood and remained a resident of that community for the next 53 years. She became a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Far Rockaway and was a member of the church’s Missionary Society and Women’s Guild.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Irene Blount; brother Thomas Morris; 15 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inc., of Inwood, was held at Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, New York.

Henry Edwards, Jr.
Family From Inwood
Henry Edwards, jr., died on Tuesday, May 30, 2000.
Henry was born in Reeseville, South Carolina to the late Henry, sr., and Pearl Edwards. He was educated in the Lawrence School District where he became known as "Bubba." Bubba was a legendary football player who received many awards and trophies. He also received a full four-year scholarship to Delaware State College, setting an example for many of the youth in his community.
He later married Joyce Cruz. To this union a loving son, Troy Lamont Edwards, was born.
Henry is survived by his son Troy; sister Mozella Pace; brothers Ralph and Peter Edwards; one brother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Private services were held under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inc., of Inwood.

Mary Fente
Far Rockaway Resident

Mary Fente died on Sunday, June 4, 2000.
She is survived by her son George and her brother George P.
Private services were held under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway.

Luella May Kulish

Luella May Kulish died on Sunday, June 4, 2000.
She is survived by her sons Michael, Aleck, Donald, and Stephen; daughters Janet J. Nygaard, Maureen LaPrelle, and Karen Pettit; brother Jerome; sisters Marilyn, Donna, and Laura; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Private services were held under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway.

Herbert Nerys
Of Arverne
Mass of Christian Burial for Herbert Nerys was celebrated on Thursday, June 8, 2000, at St. Rose of Lima Church.
Herbert is survived by his wife Debbie; sons Herbert, jr., Christopher, and Eric; daughter Angela; brothers Victor, Hector, Bennie, Raymond, and Jose; and sister Maria Navarro.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway, was held at St. Charles Cemetery.

Carl Morales
Of Far Rockaway
Carl "Charlie" Morales died on Saturday, June 3, 2000.
A Far Rockaway resident, Charlie was the beloved son of Mary and the late Charlie; loving husband of Joann; cherished father of Brenda, Carl, Lisa, Carla, and Charlie; grandfather of five; dear brother of Michele; and fond uncle of Rene.
Private services were held under the direction of Fredrick Funeral Home, of Flushing.

Trisha Lynette Murray
From Far Rockaway
Service for Trisha Lynette Murray was held on Saturday, June 3, 2000, at The First Church of God, of Far Rockaway.
Trisha was born on August 16, 1982, at St. John’s Hospital in Far Rockaway. She attended PS 197, IS 53, Far Rockaway High School, and Beach Channel High School. She was a friendly, respectful, and a fun-loving young lady. She loved life and people. Her goal was to become a nurse.
She is survived by her parents Hilda Lucas-Murray and Theophilus Murray; sisters Tracey and LaToya; niece Ashley Richards; grandmother Lucille Murray; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc., of Inwood, was held at All Saints Cemetery, Great Neck, New York.

Anthony Portis
Loved By Many
Service for Anthony Portis was held Monday, June 5, 2000, at St. John’s Baptist Church, of Rockaway Park.
Anthony was born in Queens and educated in the New York City public school system. Upon graduating from Andrew Jackson High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served for 11 years. He was a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church of Brooklyn.
He had a way of lighting up a room with his presence and making everyone feel special. He was a loving mate and devoted father and a kind, strong, and supportive son and brother.
Anthony is survived by his devoted companion Antandra Gorman; son Anthony A. Portis; daughter Antasia D.N. Portis; stepsons Lamont, Kevin, Keith, Brian, and Pete; stepdaughter Cassandra; step-grandchildren Robert Anthony and Ralik Lorenz; mother Charlie Mae Portis; sisters Juanita Anderson, JoAnn Murrell, Gwendolyn Ingram, Carol Rodgers, and Enid and Rodney Tatum; brothers Eugene and Wiley Lee Portis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
He is predeceased by his father, the late Andrew Portis.
Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc., of Inwood, was held at Calverton National Cemetery.

James P. Rice
New York’s Finest

Mass of Christian Burial for James P. Rice was celebrated on Thursday, June 8, 2000, at St. Francis de Sales Church.
James was a member of the New York Police Department.
He was the devoted husband of Margaret Dewitt-Rice; cherished brother of John and Jessie Rice and Daniel Rice; beloved son-in-law of Marge and Mike Devitt; dear brother-in-law of Bridget and Pete Santiago, Patricia and Steve Fagan, Colleen and Jim Young, Mick Devitt, and Jennifer Kanabrocki; adored uncle of Sara Rice, Pia Rice, Billy Archiello, Juliana and Emily Santiago, Kathleen and Allison Young, and Collette Fagan.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway, was held at St. Charles Cemetery.

Rosemary Russell
Of Rockaway Park
Mass of Christian Burial for Rosemary Russell was celebrated on Monday, June 5, 2000, at St. Camillus Church.
Rosemary was a Rockaway Park resident for 50 years, coming from Brooklyn.
She is survived by her niece Lillian Mitchell; nephew Francis Mitchell; grand-nieces Mary Ann Mitchell and Rosemary Lundon; and grand-nephew Thomas Lundon.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway, was held at Calvary Cemetery.
