The nation paid tribute to our fallen heroes over Memorial Day weekend with a national moment of silence at 3 p.m. It is about time! It did my heart good to see patriotism finally revived. As a Korean War widow of a West Point graduate, it gave me great solace to see special honor given on this 50 year anniversary of the Korean War to our young men and women who gave their lives on the Korean battlefield.

In St. Edmund’s Church on Sunday, Fr. Byrne gave statistics of those killed in battle from the Revolutionary War to the latest in Kosovo. He then asked those survivors present who served in these wars to please stand up so that we could applaud them for their bravery. I think it makes us all feel better if we can at least say, "Thank you" not only to our fallen heroes but those who are still alive. A veteran’s mass was held Monday morning at 9 a.m. at St. Genevieve’s in Roxbury followed by a memorial ceremony. More community veterans were present here, and I hope this practice continues for years. We can never be grateful enough for their supreme sacrifices. Thank you, guys. We love you.

At the China Club in New York City, the Tony award nominations were announced. Rosie O’Donnell will host the event at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 4. Seats are limited and tickets are $100 and $200. The first ten awards will appear on PBS (Channel 13) WNET from 8 to 9 p.m. CBS will feature excerpts and presentations of 12 Tonys from 9 to 11 p.m. If you can’t be there in person, you can find it on the tube.

Thanks to Marilyn Brady Ryan for giving me a lift to Rockaway. She is still delighted over her darling little son, Willie, who is almost three now. The proud father is Bill Ryan. The family resides in Breezy and they love it. Grandpa is Jim Brady.

How sweet it is! That’s at the Sugar Bowl where all the action is on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with half price off all drinks. Frolic with foam at the top of your glass and say, "Hello" to your friends and neighbors. Open only for weekends until June 16. Then it goes into full swing with a variety of sports tournaments.

Representatives from Rockaway are everywhere in the big town. This time at the Grand Central Partnership Grand Gourmet, The Flavor of Midtown tasting event in Vanderbuilt Hall, and the Grand Central Station for the needs of the Grand Central neighborhood. A summer resident of Belle Harbor, Keith M. DeMatteis, who cordially introduced himself to me, is CEO of Calakar, a construction company that built the attractive new Pershing Square restaurant on 42 street owned by Buzzy O’Keefe who also owns Brooklyn’s River Café and the Waterclub, smack on the East River. Keith is married to Beth Ann and has a three-week-old son, Edward, a three-year-old son, Christopher, and a six-year-old daughter, Cassie. Nice to meet you, Keith, and continued happiness with your family.

At beautiful, scenic, and serene Tavern on the Green, a press luncheon was held for the latest Indianapolis Rookie of the Year race car winner, Juan Montoya. He hails from Columbia, South America, and just loves what he does.

"Always do the thing you like best," he said, "because then you will do it well. Don’t do anything just for money." Good advice. This 24-year-old driver started the race in the middle of the front row. He dominated the race to such an extent that he led by 167 laps. Young, enthusiastic, and energetic, Juan is a true winner who will remain on the fast track for many years.

Stunning and glamorous Loretta Gregory, in an attractive large straw chapeau, decorated the bar at Kennedy’s this past Sunday with husband Chuck who was a former baseball catcher of fame in his high school days. He has recently recovered fully from a knee operation at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He gave rave accolades to surgeon Russel Warren who is a sports doctor for the Giants. He also claims magnets have helped ease his pain and affords him a sound, solid sleep at night and pain-free awakening to meet each day. I will be looking into this and give you a full report on it.
