Rockaway Little League Ain’t So Little

By Shelley Plock

The first thing I’d like to do is thank everyone who has called or e-mailed me with highlights, standings, etc. It has helped so much. Please be patient with website, as I am still getting info. There were quite a number of games played this week, making the standings close, as well as the games competitive early in the season.

Van Zachary registered their fourth victory 10-4 over Lichenstein's, as Ryan McGrisken (four innings and eight strikeouts) and Brendan Smith (two innings and six strikeouts) combined to record the win. Lichenstein's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their half of the first inning but Van Zachary came back with two runs in their half of the first. Van Zachary's took the lead in the second inning when they scored five runs after the first two batters in the inning made out. Allen Mac Saveny led Van Zachary's offense by reaching base (including two doubles and a triple) and scoring in all four at bats.

Michael Duemig had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Keith VonWesternhagen contributed a hit and a RBI. Ryan Lindgren threw out a would be base stealer at third base in Lichenstein's first inning at bat which helped prevent further scoring in that inning.

In the pee wee division, the One Stop Photo team has played all out in the first three games. Even though they only have one win to show for it, they are showing signs of bigger and better things to come. They have been led offensively by the hot hitting J. P. Doyle, "Mighty" Matt Etelson, and "Jumpin" Joe Mazzerelli, who have 20 hits between them. They have also been helped by the slick fielding of "Lovely Lauren Fiorentino, Xander Smith, andAndrew Schultz. Keep your eyes on this squad.

As of right now Mirkin Vision is 4-0 McDonald’s 3-0, One Stop Photo 1-2.
