Clean Up Dubois Point
We would life to make you aware of the correspondence sent to our public officials. The letter was sent to Senator Malcolm Smith, Congressman Gregory Meeks, Assemblywoman Pauline Rhodd Cummings, Assem-blywoman Juanita Watkins, and Jonathan Gaska, Community Board 14. The letter stated:
This is a request for an update of the status of the clean up of Dubois Point. The Arverne community was promised by our public officials that the clean up would begin in February, 2000. Dubois point is a wetland area that has been used for dumping garbage, abandoning tires, etc., which has contributed to the mosquito problem. We were informed that the public officials were meeting to implement a clean up project for this area. We want to know what is happening with this project? The Department of Parks began the clean up project, but they were fined $15,000 by the Department of Environmental Conservation for the clean up and the work stopped. It is now the month of May and nothing has been done.
If the clean up of this area is not done, we will be facing a harsh summer of mosquito infestation. In view of the West Nile Virus situation, this can become a jumping point for an epidemic. Dubois Point is and will continue to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes in the Arverne area if nothing is done. How can our public officials be silent on this issue? Something must be done! How can we put our children, our loved ones, even ourselves, through this risk? What is being done? We would like to know the status of this situation?
