Rockaway Little League Update:

Van Zachary Salon Wins Three Games

By Shelley Plock

The fields are alive with the sound of baseball.

The beautiful weather allowed all weekend games to be played, so some teams have played as many as four games. For anybody who would like to view the Rockaway Little League website please go to www.eteamz.com/rockawaylittleleague. If you would like something added or changed please just e-mail me at YankeeHuny@aol.com. I hope to have the website completed within the next week.

COACHES: Please leave a recap sheet of your games in the clubhouse. If you’d like, you can e–mail me at YankeeHuny@aol.com with any information. Whichever way you do it is fine, but please do it, as I can’t call every coach after a game. The league standings will be going into the website as well as The Wave by next issue.

Van Zachary Salon…

Van Zachary in the major baseball division opened the 2000 season with three wins. In the first game Van Zachary won a well played game against Plaza King 9-7. Brendan Smith pitched the first four innings and recorded eight strikeouts for the win. Mike Duemig pitched the final two innings for the save. AJ Arasin and Ryan Lindgren who had two hits each led Van Zachary's offense. On defense Brendan Smith and Andy Spyliopulos made outstanding plays at shortstop and second base, respectively.

In game two, Ryan McGrisken (four innings), Keith Von Esternhagen and Michael Duemig one inning each, combined on a shutout victory over ATP Insurance. Again this game was not decided until the late innings. On defense Danny McGrisken and Ryan Lindgren both threw out runners attempting to steal. Brendan Smith was 1 for 2, double, two RBI's, and two runs scored. Alan MacSaveny had two hits and scored two runs.

Van Zachary's third win was the most exciting as it came in extra innings over a well coached Daly's Dodgers. Michael Duemig pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the win. Kevin O'Brien had a big double to lead off Van Zachary's third inning and Michael Duemig and AJ Arasin followed with doubles as Van Zachary scored three times to take a 4-2 lead. Daly's Dodgers came back in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score. In the top of the seventh Daly's Dodgers pitcher after striking out the first batter, proceeded to walk the next four batters with Jordan Mirrer starting the rally. Andrew Spadaro had a good at bat and also drew a walk to keep the rally going. After the second out was recorded Andy Spyliopulos provided a clutch single, which drove in two big insurance runs.

We’d like to thank all the sponsors who so generously volunteered, allowing us to having the amount of teams we have today:
