On The Beach

With Beverly Baxter

To many who reside in others areas of New York there is still this notion
that Rockaway is an awful place to live. A great example of why many people feel contrary to this took place last Sunday afternoon when many locals stepped out to support the Ancient Order of Hibernians' effort to help fund the building of an additional wing for seniors of the Sacred Heart Hospital and Nursing Home facility in Caslebar, Co. Mayo. The benefit was organized by A.O.H members Michael Heneghen, who ventures often to Mayo; and Mike
McCarthy, Joe Flannery, and Sean Finn. To many whom may have even been unaware or unfamiliar with the cause, their presence will help with the completion of this worthwhile project. It was a great occasion to see people like Mary and Pat Leahy, The McGonigles, Chris and Mary Bowles, Dr. and Mrs. Peter Galvin, Noreen and Denis Fitzpatrick, Dr. Geraldine Chapey and Eugene Pasternak, just to name a few! In fact, the event was completely sold out, which was quite a task, given that we were competing with a hot steamy day when most would have simply preferred to go down to the beach. The benefit's
success says a lot about the generous and community-spirited people who live here.

Those who attended were enchanted by the exciting Richie O'Shea and his talented Black Velvet Band. After 40 years in the music business playing the Irish circuit, and 20 years entertaining us in Rockaway, Richie has decided to hang up his microphone and retire. This most recent A.O.H. fundraiser was his last performance. He will surely be missed. I saw him the very next day
when I stopped into his lovely store on Long Island. He shared fond memories and great stories of his career; but he looks forward to enjoying a less hectic pace. Stop by and visit him at his store, Manor Irish Gifts in
Stewart Manor, L.I.

The benefit ended with a lovely rendition of Lady of Knock mellifluously sung by Margaret McDermott who received a standing ovation! Congratulations to the A.O.H. on an event well done!

And remember mother on Mother's Day! You only get one!
