Rockaway Artists Alliance
By Susan Hartenstein
The Rockaway Artists Alliance exhibit of member artwork at Starbucks Coffee Shop in Howard Beach enhances the pleasure of taking a few minutes out of a busy day to relax with a cup of coffee and a satisfying snack. Along your route to the rest of the city, Starbucks sits next to a peaceful canal lined with homes and small boats, as gentle breezes rise off the water. Indulge yourself with a cup of hazelnut, a sweet pastry and the visual delights of the fine arts. Denis Macrae’s photograph of swans is an easy fit with the coffee shop’s waterside setting. The same is true of the work of Kevin Callaghan, which includes a painting of a Broad Channel boardwalk. Nature’s many moods and colors receive loving treatment in the works of Maureen McGuire, Fred Bellomo and Arthur Kaye. James Cantirino’s skillful use of pen and ink and wash brings a familiar Fort Tilden scene to life. Yuri Yurov’s prints are feasts of images and ideas that refuse to release the viewer from their hypnotic grasp. All works are for sale through the artists. Starbucks is located at 157-41 Cross Bay boulevard. Treat yourself to its many delights.
May 27 and May 29 of Memorial Day Weekend, RAA will hold an outdoor member art fair. Please contact me or Martha Killian ASAP if you wish to participate in this outdoor show. Each participant will be supplied a rack for his/her work, if needed. The artists will be responsible for picking up and returning racks to Fort Tilden, and for mounting and selling their work. They may bring a table and chair if desired. Postcards, prints, etc. may be included. Participants pay a $20 donation to RAA.
The month of June will see a member art exhibit in sTudio-6 at Fort Tilden. This will be the first RAA exhibition at its new headquarters. Submission dates will be sometime toward the end of May. Sculpture will be included. Watch this column for exact dates.
The guest presenter at RAA’s May 8 general meeting will be Elizabeth Harington, an expert printmaker working and teaching at Robert Blackburn’s world-famous Printmaking Workshop in Manhattan. Harington will demonstrate techniques for creating monoprints, which audience members may then try themselves. Materials will be supplied. General meetings start at 7:30 p.m. at building T-149 in Fort Tilden.
Sunday, May 21 will be a day of great rewards at Fort Tilden. "The Art of Birdwatching" is the next RAA tour to be given by Denis Macrae. Participants will meet at sTudio-6 (building T-6) in Fort Tilden at 10 a.m. on May 21. The tour will walk through the fort to the observation platform atop Battery Harris and continue along the beach. "Tourists" will be encouraged, under "Birdman" Macrae’s expert guidance, to observe the birds, live and in books, and then to draw, photograph or videotape them. The height of migration season is upon us, so the variety and number of birds will be enormous. Pause will be made for brunch (bring your own) at picnic tables. The tour will end approximately 12 noon and will take place rain or shine. Bring sketchbooks, cameras, etc. and binoculars. There is a $10 suggested donation, all money going to RAA.
From 11 a.m. to 5p.m. on this same day RAA will hold a scraping, painting and clean-up extravaganza. Yes, my children. This is your opportunity to participate in RAA’s version of a barn raising. Want buildings T-6 and T-7 to be an arts center we can all use? Then help us scrape and paint T-6’s exterior and clean up the interior of T-7. We can’t do this alone. All are welcome. Food will be provided. Not into "schvitz"? We’ll take any help you can provide—from making sandwiches to handing up paintbrushes. Stay tuned for further details.
RAA is asking for a design of the garden outside T-6 and T-7. Contact us if you have one.
"Movies by Moonlight". "Horsefeathers". "West Side Story". June 9 and 10. 8:30 p.m. Fort Tilden. This is called a tease. Interested?
Enjoy. Be here next week when some, all or none of your questions will be answered
