Come out and support the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department’s efforts to build its new firehouse at a fundraiser on Friday night, May 12 at The Beach Club. The first annual luau will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight and includes a pig roast-Hawaiian buffet, music, and drinks. Tickets are available for purchase at the firehouse on Noel road, The Beach Club, or at the door.

While we’re talking about the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department, the organization is offering CFR-D and EMS classes for those who join. This is a great opportunity for those interested in working for the New York City Fire Department to get hands-on experience and take the required courses.

Congressman Anthony Weiner will be meet and greet residents on Sunday, May 7 outside the Waldbaum’s Shopping Center, 112-15 Beach Channel drive, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. During this time Weiner hopes residents will share their views and concerns on local, national and international issues. This is a unique opportunity to speak with the congressman, so make sure you stop by.

More than $16,000 has been raised in one month for Steven Morales, the six-year-old Far Rockaway boy with a cancerous brain tumor. Residents of our community should be congratulated for coming together in a time of need. Steven has started his treatment and we will continue to update the community on his condition. We received several calls about traffic delays at the Gil Hodges-Marine Park bridge on Tuesday morning. The lift-span was being tested during two 15-minute periods, causing traffic to build up. A spokesperson from the MTA Bridges and Tunnels told us that the construction project is moving along smoothly, and we will be invited out to see the completed work in a few weeks. We’ll keep you updated…

Looking to give the gift of life…donate blood on Sunday, May 7 at St. Francis De Sales, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the small hall (between the school auditorium and the church) on Beach 129 street.

Want to support your local merchant organization and its efforts to beautify Beach 116 street? Join in the Rockaway Park Business Development Association’s third annual golf tournament on Friday, May 19. Reserve space at JKS Printing or Rockaway Video.

Now is the time of year in Rockaway that the walks/runs are taking place. This Sunday, May 7, the Rockaway Rotary Ocean Run will take place, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Beach 116 street. Beach Walk 2000, sponsored by Connelly Dance Center and The River Fund New York, will be on Sunday, May 21 at 9:15 a.m. Sign-up is at the Connelly Dance Center, 114-03 Beach Channel drive.

May 15 is almost here and you know what that means…car jockeying begins! Until September 30, residents can’t park from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday, and holidays, and there is no parking at all in Neponsit during this time.
