COPS NEED HELP
By Joan Ward George
According to police, Smith was shot numerous times in the head, back and abdomen after having been chased down Beach 13 street by an unidentified gunman who ran after Smith firing up to 15 bullets. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not as yet determined the motive for Smith’s murder and, as The Wave went to press Thursday, there were no arrests made in the homicide and no suspects were identified. It is, however, speculated by police that Smith may have been involved in a heated dispute earlier in the day with a known drug dealer and that his homicide was a direct result of this incident.
According to Deputy Inspector Michael Morley of the 101 Precinct, the police are still looking into several possibilities.
Smith had run-ins with the police that date back to 1989, including five arrests. He reportedly served a little more than three years in prison for a 1995 assault in which he was convicted of illegal entry and assault. Smith has been out of jail since the spring of 1998 and apparently has had no run-ins with the law since that time.
Ironically, Smith’s brother, Edward Dion Smith, was only 19 years of age when he was shot to death while he was watching a basketball game and caught in the crossfire of a battle between teenagers outside the Redfern Houses.
Police are reaching out to the community for assistance in apprehending Smith’s murderer. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Detective Dolan at the 101 Precinct Detective Squad at 868-3429.
