B.C.A.C. News:

Parade Just Around The Corner

By Marty Feeney

Broad Channel Athletic Club will be holding its first annual Jamaica Bay Little League opening day parade on Saturday April 29, 2000. The parade will kick off 10 a.m. at the B.C.A.C. building located on Noel road and proceed to Memorial Field located at 1st road and Cross Bay boulevard. This will be a historic day for the town of Broad Channel as we enter our first year hosting a chartered little league for girls softball and boys baseball.

We have divisions in every age category beginning with the Farm Division, four to 6 years old, all the way up to the Junior Division, 13 to 16 years old. In addition to all the players we will have many attractions in the parade. The N.Y.P.D.
Mounted Unit will be with us along with members of the F.D.N.Y. Members of the 100 Precinct will help out with traffic control under the supervision of our local commander, Captain Scirica. We would like to thank the captain, as well as our local beat cop Pete and Community Affairs Officer Hector Tello, for all their assistance throughout the years.

The parade will be led by our very own and courageous men and women from the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department.

"Clowning Around" will be entertaining the parade route as well as a local marching band. The parade will host all our local officials, politicians and some very close friends of the B.C.A.C. This will be a special day for the B.C.A.C. as we honor one of our
veteran members. Jack Connelly will be our grand marshal for the day and will be presented with a life time achievement award for all his years of dedication to the children of Broad Channel as well as Rockaway and Howard Beach. Jack has held many positions in the club and is one of our past presidents. He is still active in the club today and is one of our biggest supporters. Jack is well known for his days as a player on the football field and for his years of coaching.

Jack will be honored by throwing out the first ball along with Willie Wiese, another veteran member of the club. Willie has been an inspiration to the club for many years and has been presented with a life time achievement award at our last Hall of Fame dinner. Having Jack and Willie throwing out the first balls of the season will be a great day in the history of the Broad Channel Athletic club.

The day will be filled with many happy faces on all the kids as they
parade to the field. Team and individuals photos will be taken, refreshments will be available as the shack will be open. The first game will be played on Monday evening, 5:30 p.m., followed by the first game under the lights at 7:30 p.m.

The newly formed B.C.A.C. Jamaica Bay Little League would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our sponsors, for if it wasn't for their generosity and support the dream of having this league would be far fetched. We hope this season will be the first of many and our goal is to give every child the opportunity to play organized little league ball. Hopefully we will have great weather and look forward to a great day for all the children in the Broad Channel Athletic Club.

Space for boys ages eight to 12 are still available to play baseball with the little league. Contact Marty Feeney to sign-up (contact info available by calling The Wave office).
