From The Artists Studio

Rockaway Artists Alliance

By Susan Hartenstein

The Rockaway Artists Alliance is presenting an exhibit of member artworks at Starbucks Coffee Shop, 157-41 Cross Bay boulevard in Howard Beach, from May 1 through May 28. The exhibit will culminate in an outdoor fair on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday May 27 and Sunday, May 28. Dates to submit work to be juried for the indoor exhibit are Friday, April 28 from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Bring the work to sTudio-6 (building T-6) in Fort Tilden. Each artist may submit a maximum of three pieces. They must be framed with a secure wire strung across the back. Hanging donation is $10, with 20 percent of any member sales going to RAA. If you have any questions or absolutely cannot bring work at these times, contact me at home or through the RAA office. Details on the outdoor fair will appear in further columns.

Thanks to RAA’s Roni Henning for an extremely informative and enjoyable lecture/demonstration on non-toxic silk screen printmaking at our April 10 general meeting. Where do we sign up for the workshop?

Alex Guzman is teaching an after school mural workshop for RAA at P.S.183, in which he and the students created a "Peace" quilt. Denis Macrae worked on a bird mural with the children, teaching them about the birds that inhabit Rockaway. Both projects of these talented students are now displayed in the school’s front entrance hall. Photos accompany the column.

RAA’s KidsmART after school program is humming along. We thought we would periodically show you some of the work these great kids produce. Presented this week are a few pieces from the cartooning class taught by Kevin Brown.

Enjoy. See you here next week.
