The Week at

The Rock
by Stuart L. Astor

On Friday, April 7, 31 students from Far Rockaway High School’s "Red Team" visited the State University of New York’s campus at Stony Brook in Suffolk County. The students ranged in standing from freshmen to seniors and included four members of the Class of 2000 who have already been accepted and will be starting as freshmen at SUNY Stony Brook in September.

The trip was sponsored by York College (CUNY) and arranged by FRHS College Coordinator Richard McCauley. Bus transportation was donated by Rev. Floyd Flake’s A.M.E. Church. The group was accompanied by the administrators of the Red Team: Mrs. Fern Jacoby (team coordinator), Mrs. Susan Simon (guidance counselor) and Ms. Beverly Diop (community based organization administrator).

While at Stony Brook, the students received orientation from Mr. Rob Gordon, an admissions counselor. Next, they toured the campus, seeing lecture halls, dormitories, athletic facilities, and eating areas. For most of our students, this tour was the first experience of life at a residential, sleepaway college. All were impressed with the size of the school and the scope of activities available there. Many were motivated to use SUNY Stony Brook as a goal for their own college ambitions.
