Rockies Red Mites defeated the Teal Mites (13-4) in an action-packed season finale at the Rockaway Rink on Sunday, March 26.
Thomas Kirby and Jimmy "Jimbo-Jones" McCabe defended the Red net against 23 Teal shots and allowed only four goals. Teal goalies Andrew and Stephen Haars turned in stellar netminding performances -- despite not feeling up-to-par due to a flu bug.
Scoring highlights were as follows-- Andrew Cahalan, Jason Perrone and Brian Woods each had several shots on net. Thomas Ryan scored a goal. Brendan Meade and Thomas Siederman each scored twice. Eddie Warren scored three times for the hat trick. Neil Howard got a hat trick plus one. Sean Kirby was the high scored with a hat trick plus two. Way to go guys!
Ryan Laurain and John Walsh delivered first-rate performances as first-time first-line defensemen. Sean Siederman and Joe Durant cruised the rink and reacted quickly to opposition activity. Michael Forcina, Stephen "Slick" Pulkoski and Nicholas McElhatton filled the rink with motion and speed and really made things happen.
Anthony Allocco and Thomas Gersh created many scoring chances. Elizabeth Cholakis and Michael Brennen did a fine job on wing. Meegen Reed and Chris Forman played smart and tough at both ends of the rink. Deirdre Munday and Patrick Walsh provided vigilant coverage of the Red lines.
Following the game, the Red team skated several victory laps around the rink carrying the Rockies Cup and the American Flag. The Wings then celebrated with a team party at the Boulevard Tap and Grill Restaurant. The Teal team will have their end-of –season party next week with a parent vs. player game at the rink (sounds like fun!).
Thanks to Red Coaches Sean Kirby and Don Howard and Teal Coach Jim Higgins and the entire squad of all-star parents who gave of their time all-season long. Gratitude to game refs Christi Forcina and Rockies League President Walter "Dancer" Rogers for "calling it like they saw it."
Good luck to Jimmy McC, Andrew C, Thomas R, Neil H, John W and Sean K--who move up in the fall to the next division.
This ends a fine season of Mite Division Rockies Hockey. So long Hockey Mavens--see you all in September!
