Stella Maris Basketball

Victory At Final Home Game

Stella Maris' varsity basketball team hosted their final home game of the 1999-2000 season on Thursday, February 17. The Lady Flippers
defeated St. Savior High School (48-37) ending their regular season with a 15-7 overall record and going 5-6 in league competition.

Alana Bell led SM with nine points. Seniors Beth McGuinness (8), Terri McElroy (8), Kerry Feeney
(7), and Katie Raphael (2) added to Stella's total. SM's senior point guard
Maggie Allen (sprained ankle) received her "ceremonial" final home game start, but was removed after the Flippers gained possession of the game's tip-off.

Prior to the game the varsity team expressed their gratitude to Stella
Maris' cheerleaders, Coach Mrs. Tara Scannell and Athletic Director Mrs. Ellen Faughnan. Special recognition was also given to faculty
members Mrs. MaryEllen Warne and Mrs. Marjorie McClean, as well as Sister Jane Bannon and, Principal Geri Martinez. Senior parents were thanked for their sacrifices made for S.M. basketball and Stella Maris High School.

And then the five graduating seniors were given their own, much deserved time in the spotlight. Maggie Allen, Kerry Feeney, Terri McElroy, Beth McGuinness, and Katie Raphael received accolades from Coach Maureen Gigliello, were dutifully "Roasted" by their teammates, and then were presented with flowers,
balloons, and framed practice jerseys as a symbol of all their hard work.
After the game, the seniors, their parents, siblings and coach celebrated at the Harbor Light where they were given the royal treatment.

SM's playoff picture is still unclear (as to opponent), but quarter-final
games will be held on Thursday, March 2. The Lady Flippers' eyes are all trained on a repeat appearance in the Catholic State Championships. However, "one game at a time" is their play-off motto.

Flipper Footnotes: The injured reserve/sick bay list is officially re-opened with Katie Raphael (bruised thumb) and Kerry Feeney (ill) added on. Both are due to reappear in quarter-finals.

Once again, the team thanked Dragon's Den Florist for Senior Day!

New additions to team Lauren Bobby and Kathleen Donlin are much needed and very able welcomes to the roster. J.V. wraps will appear next week.
