There has been much happening in the world of the Rockaway Rugby Club. After a disappointing fall season, the Fisheads regrouped at their January annual general meeting in the hopes of improving things for the
future. Some of the hot topics discussed were recruitment, field renovation at Ft. Tilden, improvements to the clubhouse at 113-06 Rockaway Beach boulevard, nomination of new officers and the spring schedule.
Preseason practice will commence at the St. Camillus gym this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to come and participate in some full court basketball and rugby ball handling drills. This is an open practice for anyone interested in a little exercise. The clubs first outdoor practice will be on Thursday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Ft. Tilden. Again, all are welcome to attend.
Rockaways second annual Collegiate St. Patrick's Day tournament will be held on March 4. This year's event will include teams from Iona, Stonybrook, Siena, and Fairfield colleges. Games will be played at the football field at 150 street and Rockaway Beach boulevard starting at 10 a.m.
Following the finals and the parade, a fundraiser to benefit Tom Regan will be held at the rugby club beginning immediately after the parade. Tom Regan, a friend of the Rockaway Rugby Club, was inured in a rugby match while a student at Oneonta Unniversity, leaving him with a severe spinal injury. A benefit in his honor with music by the Cunningham brothers and DJ Nick will commence immediately following the parade.
Also on March 4, the Rockaway Rugby Club will be conducting its first ever membership drive. Anyone interested in joining the club is encouraged to stop by and check out our cozy clubhouse and huge backyard at 113-06 Rockaway Beach boulevard.
Congratulations to Jean Egan on being named MVP of the Chelsea Piers Women's Soccer League and good luck to brother Kermit, who has resolved to "party more" in the new millennium.
