Wary Of City's Plans

Dear Editor;

Regarding last week's cover story and Edgemere lands, the ex-shopping center at 53rd between RBB and BCD, everytime I hear the word 'city' in the same  sentence as the word 'acquisition,' it makes me nervous. This is compounded  when the New York Housing Authority is also mentioned. It sounds like once  again, the people are being squeezed off privately-owned land for back-taxes owed or some other contrived reason, so that the city can get land  rich--supposedly for the purpose of creating something better for the public.

I would  be wary were I an Arverne resident and would make very sure that Hope VI revitalization project for $170 million dollars is not just a handle to pull away another pot of gold, and add to the city's private coffers.

What're you getting for  your money, and is the shopping center worth doing something else with?  I don't know. I'm asking.
