14 Year Old Shot In The Back

By Joan Ward George

The Edgemere Housing Development was the scene of yet another shooting last Sunday, February 20, when a 14 year old boy was shot in the back while walking around the housing unit with a group of his friends.

Although initially reported in a daily newspaper that the boy was shot by an unidentified man, police from the 101 Precinct told The Wave that the victim stated that he was shot by a stray bullet. The young man was shot once in the lower back and transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he was treated and proclaimed to be in stable condition. He was since been released from the hospital. According to a police spokesperson, the victim was fortunate in as much as no major organs were injured.

One woman in the area told The Wave that she couldn’t believe that 14 year olds were out and about walking around this troubled section after 1 a.m. A resident of the development also told The Wave that it is the norm for kids to be hanging out in the development until the wee hours of the morning.

Police were still investigating the shooting as The Wave went to press Thursday, but were receiving very little cooperation in the neighborhood. This is the sixth shooting that has taken place in the 101 Precinct in the past month.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the 101 Precinct Detective squad at 718-868-3429.
