Sylvia Diaz
From Far Rockaway

Mass of Christian Burial for Sylvia Diaz was held on Monday, February 14 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church.
Sylvia was a devoted homemaker.
She is survived by her sons Jose A. Lopez, jr. and Jose F. Lopez; daughters Luz A. Lopez and Anna S. Lopez; mother Hayde Almodovar; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Private services were held under the direction of Meserole Funeral Home, Inc. of Inwood.

Victor F. Dibs
Formerly Of Rockaway

Victor F. Dibs died December 23, 1999.
Formerly of Rockaway Park, Victor was a post office worker.
Widower of the late Catherine, Victor is survived by his daughters Noreen David, Mary Creech and Sue Dibs; brothers John and Patrick; sisters Elaine and Susan; eight grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and godchild Eileen Harris of Belle Harbor.
He is predeceased by his daughter, the late Janet Murphy.
Private services were held at All County Funeral Home, West Palm Beach, Florida.
Interment was held at Queen of Peace Cemetery, West Palm Beach.

Thomas J. Farrell
From Rockaway Point
Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas J. Farrell was celebrated on Monday, February 14 at St. Thomas More Church.
He died on February 9 at Peninsula Hospital. He was 44 years old.
Thomas was a Rockaway Point resident for 20 years, coming from Brooklyn.
He served in the U.S. Marines from 1973 to 1974 and came out a PFC. Thomas was a carpenter for Local 1536.
He is survived by his loving wife Carol (nee Fullum); sons Thomas and Sean; daughter Caitlin; sisters Joan, Ann and Kathleen Farrell; and many nieces and nephews.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery.

Leona Freamon
Of Inwood
Service for Leona Freamon was held on Wednesday, February 16 at First Church of God, Far Rockaway.
Leona moved to Inwood from Florida. She joined the First Church of God and served as one of its staunchest supporters throughout her life.
She worked at Grumman Aircraft during World War II. After the war, she became one of Inwood’s most active political and civil rights leaders. She was a member of the board of directors of the Five Towns Community House, President of the local chapter of the NAACP, a Democratic Committee person and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary League of B’nai Brith.
While she was busy with community matters, Leona operated one of Inwood’s first day-care centers out of her home. Many of Inwood’s residents received an early start in life through her discipline and guidance.
Leona is survived by one son; two daughters; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends who have loved her dearly.
Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Rockville Cemetery, Lynbrook.

Grace C. Gannon
Of Rockaway Beach
Mass of Christian Burial for Grace C. Gannon will be celebrated Saturday, February 20 at St. Camillus Church.
Grace was a Rockaway Beach resident for 30 years, coming from Washington Heights.
She worked as a data processor for Metromedia Co. in New Jersey and later joined the office staff at St. Camillus rectory.
Daughter of the late Joan and Francis McLaughlin, Grace is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Kelliher of Long Beach and her granddaughter Sarah.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc. will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, New York.

Joseph Patrick James
Rockaway Resident

Service for Joseph Patrick James was held on Monday, February 14, 2000.
Joseph was a graduate of The Neptune Township School System in Mt. Holly, New Jersey. After graduation he served in the armed forces.
He resided in Rockaway since the 1970’s.
Joseph enjoyed playing his guitar and singing gospel songs.
He is survived by a daughter; his mother Thelma Bough; one brother; aunts Vera Elagore, Joyce Matthew and Ester Frazier; uncles Gilbert Frazier and Levi Bough; four nieces; one nephew; two grand-nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.
Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery.

Richard McDermott
Formerly From Here

Richard McDermott passed away recently.
Formerly of Inwood and Far Rockaway, Richard lived in Floral Park.
He was a retired structural ironworker for Local 361.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Catherine (nee Grillo).
Private services were held at Boten Funeral Home, 69 Atlantic avenue, Floral Park.
Interment was held at Holy Road Cemetery, Westbury.

James Russel Mobley
Of Far Rockaway

Service for James Russel Mobley was held on Tuesday, February 15 at First Baptist Church, Far Rockaway.
James was employed by St. John’s Episcopal Hospital for several years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he worked on the Usher Board for several years. He was a devoted father and loving husband.
He is survived by his mother Mattie Mobley; wife Maude Mobley; children James Mobley, jr., Cathy Mobley, Mark Mobley and Melanie Mobley; sisters Mae Jolly and Ruth Smith; brothers Elester Mobley and Elworth Mobley; six grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery.

Catherine Morris
From Bayswater

Catherine Morris died on Thursday, February 10, 2000.
Born and raised in New York City, Catherine came to the Rockaways in 1959. She resided in Bayswater and later lived in the senior housing on Beach 14 street in Far Rockaway. Afterward she became a resident of the Park Nursing Home.
Catherine is survived by her sons Dennis and John Francis (Duke); daughter Eleanor (Patsy) Rosa; daughters-in-law Barbara Morris and Dorothy Jurqielewicz; sisters Theresa Meyers and Elizabeth Collins; grandchildren Kathryn Caban, John Morris, jr., Catherine Jean, John Zabala, Darlene Garcia, Miranda Avalos and Julissa Perez; great-grandchildren Manuel, Christopher, Samantha, Heather Marie, Anthony and Brandon Garcia and Ariel and John Zabala, jr.
She was predeceased by her sister, the late Grace Mahoney and her brothers, the lat Jimmy, Eddie and Henry Collins.

Aristides Pena
From Arverne

Mass of Christian Burial for Aristides Pena was held on Tuesday, February 15 at St. Rose of Lima Church.
He was a professional tailor.
Aristides is survived by his wife Agapita Pena; son Carlos; daughter Karen Aris; sister Mayra Esperanza; and four grandchildren.
Interment under the direction of Lawrence Funeral Home, Inc. was held at St. Charles Cemetery, Long Island.

Emily Seaman
From Far Rockaway

Service for Emily Seaman was held on Friday, February 18.
She was a Far Rockaway resident and worked as a dietary nurse’s aide.
Emily is survived by her children Lorraine Seaman, James Seaman, Carol DeVivio, Maureen Hledky and Eileen Hamlet; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Interment under the direction of Lawrence Funeral Chapel was held at Pinelawn Cemetery, Long Island.
