Greater NYC Ice Hockey League
New York Stars PeeWee II team was beaten handily, 12-1, by the Dix Hills Rebels, on Sunday, February 13 at the Abe Stark Arena, Coney Island, Brooklyn.
The Stars played the Dix Hill squad tough throughout the first period giving up only one goal on a power play at the 5:10 mark. The Stars only goal came with 1:19 remaining in the first when assistant captain Bryan Elfant shoveled a pretty centering pass from the right circle that linemate Igor Valovoy scooped up and slammed in net.
The defensive parings of captain Nick Mason and Ray Ebro; Lenny DiMauro and Michael Long; Charlie (the Hammer) Baldini and Paul Strenk allowed only eight shots on Stars goalie Gerry Conte, who made some brilliant saves to keep the score even at one heading into the second stanza.
"We played pretty well for the first period and a half," Stars coach Jamie Grieco said after the Long Island Hockey League game. "But then we gave up our checking game and the Rebels took over."
The Rebels scored four times in the second period while the Stars only real scoring chance came on a power play that failed to produce results. Shawn Rock, the second half of the Stars goalie tandem took over net minding duties but he was also unsuccessful in stopping the constant Rebels assaults.
The Stars appeared to lose their skating legs as the match wore on. The defense repeatedly gave up the blue line and allowed the Rebels entrée into the defensive zone almost at will. The Stars forwards found forechecking the speedy Rebels a difficult task.
The Long Island team got seven more goals in the final period. The Stars fired off only four shots on net while the Rebels amassed 24. With the Stars missing two top defensive players, Jamie Grieco and Chris Massi, the Long Islanders totaled 47 shots on goal while the borough boys managed only 15 in the match.
