Just returned from a short stay on a travel agent’s FAM at the Allegro Resort in Turks and Caicos outer Islands, south of the Bahamas. They offer a whopping good time. The Allegro Resort is the only resort on the island that has a casino. It is all inclusive, and, that means all your drinks, food, terrific nightly entertainment and sports facilities are free. They have 24 hour tennis. A championship golf course near by, deep sea fishing, snorkeling, scuba, you name it. Spa facilities are available. The meals are served buffet style in the main dining room three times a day. There are two other restaurants offering sit down table service; one Italian and the other by the beach that serves Caribbean fare. It is all inclusive with your up front payment. With an air package your airline flight is included.

TWA provided a charter plane for the participating travel agents on this FAM (familiarization tour or inspection tour of Allegro Resort and the Turks and Caicos Islands). TWA is now flying direct service from JFK to Turks and Caicos ever Saturday and has joined partners with Allegro Resorts and Casino.

The islands (over 365 if you count the small uninhabited patches in the beautiful turquoise sea), are really comprised of 40 picturesque islands and cays and are world renowned for the most spectacular diving sports in the Caribbean. You swim in mantas, tropical fish and humpback whales. For a diver this is the closest you’ll come to heaven. The Providenciales of Turks (name derived from the blossom on top of their growing cactus that resembles the Turks turbin) and Caicos boast a 12 mile white sand beach. We visited the only conch (pronounced conk) far in the world and learned the difference between the male and the female and how they mate. We sampled conch salad and found it quite tasty and refreshing. A rum punch boat ride took us along the coastline. We were then able to videotape the many resorts, large and small, built along the shore which we had inspected the day before. There are accommodations for everyone’s specific needs and for each budget. The weather of 80 degrees is perfect. The delightful cool breeze that blows off the water keeps you comfortable all day and reminds you of the climate in Hawaii.

We had a great trip except for the fact it was far too short. I was not only there as a travel agent, but on assignment by Alegro Resort to videotape the travel agents on their stay. Jim Chladek, my travel director/camerman came along with me to do just that. I will also add our footage and interviews to make this trip to Turks and Caicos another program in my TV series "Dorothy Dunne Travels in Style". Watch for it a month down the road.

Don’t hesitate to visit these islands. Though they are little islands, there are big things to do especially at Allegro Resort.

Jim Dunn celebrated his 85 birthday at a brunch at Kennedy’s with his family. . .his children Margaret and Jim, Marian and John, Jim and Marian, Vincent and Peter.

Our Latino readers take note: The Doral bank, a brand new American Latino bank recently opened with great fan fare on Park Avenue and 27 street in New York City. They had a fantastic reception at their first Manhattan location. It is a community bank and plans to do business in all boroughs. . .the next in Queens. They are very community minded and will offer low cost mortgages, free checking with interest and interest earning savings as well as many other amenities. Not only should the American Latinos in Queens take advantage of their valued offers, but no heavy ethnic American groups as well. They are looking for American clients. And, since they have been so successful for years in Puerto Rico they have now moved to New York City and expect to expand throughout the United States. From what I could see they have all the modern technologies a well run bank should have, but above all they are a bank with a heart. If you are in need of money they will do all in their power to accommodate you.

Thank you for your kind comments on my hair and nails. Gary and Janet from Janet’s salon do their best to keep them in good "showing".

Iberian Festivale is taking place at the Roger Smith Hotel every evening celebrating the New Millennium and the art of food with spectacular regional Spanish cooking for three weeks in February. This week was the Catalan Cuisine and Torres Wines featuring Barcelona Chefs Fermin Paig and Soler who have returned for a repeat performance. We had a seven course tasting dinner starting with an apertif wine and a specific chosen wine and each course to follow. Just superb. The price fixed dinner is $50 plus tax. A dining experience you’ll long remember.

For a prosperous Chinese New Year. . .don’t "sweep", not sleep as was printed, on the day or night of New Year’s Eve.
