Stars continued to roll as they defeated the Nassau County Cubs 4-1
in an Eastern Hockey League Game played at Port Washington, N.Y.
The action was nonstop as both teams moved the puck up and down the ice as they attacked and counterattacked. Both teams played well positionally and the defenses were outstanding.
With 11 seconds to go in the opening period Stars right wing T.J.
Leonard snapped home the puck after some great forechecking from his center Kenny Fiorentino, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead. 1:35 into the second period they were up by a 2-0 score as center Michael Kress carried the puck from the neutral zone into the attacking zone and found the twine.
Stars defenseman Paddy Mead provided the game highlight as he rushed the puck end to end around and through the Cub defense, and culminated the rush with a rising wrist shot from the high slot over the goalies left shoulder at the 7:16 mark, making it 3-0 for the Stars. The Cubs jumped on some poor defensive coverage by the Stars 39 seconds into the final period. Forward F. Sgaraglio left alone in the slot beat Stars goalie Chris Gerardi to make it a 3-1 game. But Stars center beat the Cub goalie through the five hole 3:18 into the period to ice the game for the Stars.
The Stars out shot the Cubs 21-12 and goalies Gerardi and Ricky
Cibrano were on the top of their game as they shared the goaltending duties. Veteran Stars forward Chris Hayes took a regular shift on defense
and played a super game at the blueline.
New York Stars Mite Division… Sunday, January 23, 2000…
The Stars hosted the Hurricanes from Hackensack, N.J. in a game played at the Abe Stark Rink in Coney Island, N.Y. The Hurricanes completely outplayed the Stars and won easily 5-1. The visitors out shot the Stars 34-12 and were it not for the outstanding goaltending the Stars received from Chris Gerardi and Ricky Cibrano the Hurricanes would have had many more goals.
So strong was the Hurricane forechecking that the Stars vaunted
breakouts were nullified. The Stars went down 1-0 at the 7:51 mark of the first period as Dom Librie skated through the defense and beat Gerardi.
The Hurricane made 2-0 3:20 into the second period as Michael Kowalenko scored assisted by Dave Roccaova. The Stars got a goal early in the third period as center Michael
Kress blocked a Hurricane shot in the high slot and put home a nifty break-a-way goal, making it 2-1. The goal seemed to give a jump to the Stars, but the Hurricanes refused to give in. They just continued to smother the Stars wings along the boards forcing turnover after turnover in the Stars zone.
Luke Menken made it 3-1 as he scored unassisted with 2:32 to play. With 1:07 left in the game Librie got his second goal assisted by Michael Kim. The Hurricanes closed out the scoring with 14 seconds left as Chris Pacicco beat a beleaguered Cibrano assisted by Mason Baccardo and Librie. The loss left the Stars with an overall 20-14-2 record.
